Opinions from iPad Users

Sorry, no. You have to link a US funding source to your PayPal account.
Like assagain said, you can buy vouchers with your SA card though :)

I have a "verified" PayPal account. All charges made by me on my PayPal account are debited against my Standard Bank MasterCard. In order to become verified with PayPal, they will send your Card Company (in this MAsterCard, a digit code) which you must get telephonically. You need to input that code into your PayPay user profile. As you will note on PayPal's Home Page they have a banking relationship with FNB. My advice to anyone is this: getting a verified PayPal account is not impossible. I know of several friends in and around Durban who did so late last year (2009). When I got mine, it was several years ago and the requirement rules may have been different. Given the amount of online fraud in SAF there is no doubt they have put the goal posts a little further out. That being said, get one today - you cant be without one online today. PayPal is a USA company so getting your status verified with them is absolutely vital for your future online purchases. Even if you have no intention of using PayPal today - get yourself verified as you might just need it tomorrow.

Nice review. Thanx :) I myself am also waiting for the 3G model...
You say Early Edition is pretty good on the iPad? I'm hoping Reeder makes an iPad version pretty soon too :)

As you are getting the 3G iPad remember it uses a Micro SIM card - these two URL's maybe of interest to you.

Micro - SIM adaptors which you can purchase here using PayPal

To convert your SA SIM: - you should try using some prepaid cards before your main SIM first!:

A company I've used many times (based in Turkey) for iPhone cases have a great new iPad case (currently out of stock). Door to door UPS delivery is 4 days.

True. But just keep in mind that you won't be able to link your South African PayPal account to a US iTunes account...

Also keep in mind that when you buy and download iTunes content outside of your region you are violating copyright laws.

Absolutely true, but I feel better actually paying for it on iTunes than using torrents etc... ;) So yes, it is illegal, but in my opinion "less illegal" than getting it for free.

Is anyone using the iPad extensively for pdf reading? I'm itching for a device to read my magazines on (in the comfort of my house on the couch in front of the tv - and in bed :)). Does it work well? Any issues you've picked up?

Internet and mail is a bonus. I'm not interested in ebooks - I prefer the real thing.

Any alternatives to recommend? I'm thinking about the Kindle DX too, although the lack of colour, and internet surfing is somewhat off-putting. I have a netbook, but it's extremely impractical for reading pdf's.

On paper the iPad looks like the perfect device for what I need.

Thanks!

PS Sorry for resurrecting, but didn't feel like starting a new thread.

The answer is yes, and it does it extremely well. I downloaded an app called "goodreader" for the iPad. A fantastic pdf reader with other functionality. I download my magazines for free off the internet, and onto my iPad. Handy to have all the latest mags on the iPad. These mags typically cost over R150.00 each at CNA (the overseas publications - Mac User, Mac Format etc), so I am saving myself thousands of rands reading them this way. Apart from the savings, it's a great way to store all your mags - on one device. After reading them, I either save them on an external hard drive if there is interesting stuff on them that I want to refer back to, or I just delete them off.
Oh, the app "goodreader" is only a 99c download if I remember correctly.

Great thanks, it's what I wanted to hear. Did you import? What model and what did you pay?

No, I went and collected mine from the USA. All the stores were sold out on all models, so I bought from an ebay seller - met the guy in person, and exchanged cash for the iPad. Got the 64GB 3G. Paid a premium as the stores were out of stock - this is the top of the range one, selling for around $ 829.00 ex tax...I think, but I had to pay $ 1100.00.

I prefer SimplyPDF. iBooks is also going to support PDF in an update soon.

I'm using Cloud Reader.
Got a whole lot of magazines, comics [Archie/Asterix :)] and ebooks on it :)
I do reccommend getting the Apple cover/stand thou.

iPad is perfect for reading :)

Goodreader is brilliant stuff... Goodreader+Evernote = the best of both worlds, keeping the articles you want to without the fluff!

M

i find goodreader to be pretty slow at rendering pdf files, cloudreader and fastpdf work much better (and cloudreader is free)
