A controversial "whites only" scholarship has put a Rhode Island university on the map for all the wrong reasons.

The College Republicans, a student group at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island, offered the $250 scholarship as a "parody" of other bursaries aimed specifically at ethnic minorities. The application for the scholarship included requests for a photo to "confirm whiteness," and that "Evidence of bleaching will result in disqualification."

The winner of the scholarship, Adam Noska, decided to donate his money to a relief fund for victims of a night club fire that happened in Rhode Island last year.

This is not the first time the College Republicans have made headlines, however.

Also this month, the group brought in anti-affirmative action speaker Reginald Jones to speak during Black History Month, and accused the annual celebration of promoting socialism.

it is her money and all but.....

What if she had not self-glorified herself (as she always does) and strategically spent that $40 million on 40 disadvantaged schools in the area? Imagine what $1 million on each school spent properly could have done.

And how many more kids she could have helped! Oh, well, she has her own school where she can teleteach to from Chicago. Oh boy....er girl!

You know as well as anybody else that $40 mil would have disappeared down some slush fund and would never have gotten to the kids, better this way so that she has control over the entire teaching environment.

I guess that's true. Sad that such is life. :(

Personally I don't have a problem with it being based upon previously disadvantage ... but as long as that includes all previously disadvantaged people ...

wonder if the girls also need to suffer from an eating disorder
one year all the girls are fat the next year they all are skinny

Oprah is the devil!
Now that's hardly fair to the devil :D

We could perhaps call this racist or sexist, but black women in Africa are far more likely to end up poorly educated or illiterate, with no options, but to depend on men for support.

Any bets on how long the school will stay in shape before they start throwing stones throught the windows, and gangsters sell drugs on the premises.
By they you mean? Perhaps those barbarians that don't know how look after property and can't really learn anyway so there's no point trying to educate them? I'm sure the NP mentioned them.

Oprah should just bring the very best drugs and gangsters the US has to offer ;)

How u gonna explain this to our kids????????
All Kids are born equal, and all deserve equal oppertunity.
Those are nice words and it would be great if it were the case. The fact is that if you can send your child to one of the former whites-only schools, specifically the relatively exclusive model C schools, they are likely to receive a better education than at the almost non-funded schools formerly meant only for black students.

If you want to explain it to your children you can point out that they are relatively privileged.

Thank you Oprah for helping those young girls and giving them such wonderful opportunities. Thank you for giving these poor girls their own beds and their own clothes. Thank you for helping create a smart group of leaders for tomorrow generation.

... Don't make me puke. This was nothing more than a publicity stunt and I'd be frankly shocked if Oprah actually gave a damn about the school itself.

well she donated money and actually did something tangible. That is something most celebrities can't and don't do. So regardless if this is publicity stunt or not, she's done something to make a change and an effort to give people a chance.

Thats if you look at it from your own shallow perspective. Im glad she is helping those people, for whatever reasons, because I am sure I can best my last Rand you wouldnt do shi!t for anyone else.

Xarog whether or not it's a publicity stunt, she's helping kids in our country - not even her own country. She always says that she loves this country, and apart from helping these kids she's also giving SA free publicity. So either way we shouldn't be complaining.

The question is if you had a few million, how much of that would you spend towards a good cause in your own country, let alone another country?

Oprah is the devil!

I agree that Oprah is the devil...I have seen it with my own eyes on her show.....I think this school, while it will undoubtedly do some good is ultimately a way for Oprah to form her own cult!!!

If it's a publicity stunt, so what? She has the money and is willing to do this. Let her. Whether she cares is irrelevant - at least some kids are now being afforded a better opportunity - one they would probably never have had were it not for Oprah.

I thought you were the devil? Unless you're just being backwards.

Finally!

It really make more sense to give opportunities to all underprivileged kids, not only girls

jeez what made her realize this... honestly
