Optical / Toslink cable to connect PS3 to HT

I have asked a similar question a few months ago and have not yet found a suitable solution, other then buying a AV receiver (Sony STR-DA2400ES), but that's still too expensive for me right now.

The basic idea is, I want to play sound through my HT (Sony DAV777) while playing games on the PS3. I also use the PS3 as my mkv player via PS3 media server. My HDTV sound is OK, but would rather want to make use of the HT.

I have done some more research and found that using an Optical/Toslink cable to connect between the HT and PS3 will allow for sound. My only question then is, how will the video be transmitted? As I have red HDMI is the only medium that carries both video and sound on 1 cable?

Thoughts, Advise?
Any help is much appreciated.

I may have a solution for you

step 1: you run the hdmi cable to your TV as per normal.

Step 2: then run your toslink optical cable to your AVR (if indeed it has a toslink input which I assume it does)

Step 3: On PS3 menu go to sound settings - scroll down to "output multiple sound" (paraphrasing) and switch to ON (on FW 3.1.5).It is OFF by default or when changing HDMI settings.

Step 3b: Set the sound settings on PS3 menu to output bitstream, not PCM, to allow the AVR to decode surround sound formats...one caveat here is that some games will output multichannle PCM (like Resistance 1 - 7.1 MPCM) sound - so fiddle with the settings and find out what suits your ear best.

Optional step: (turn down the volume of your HDTV to 0 if you only want the sound outputting from your AVR)

Voila :D - digital sound, and DD and DTS tracks will be decoded by your AVR where applicable :)

Questions: I dont have an AV receiver (not yet anyway), just a DVD player with built in AMP. The DVD has HDMI and Optical inputs. Will this still work?
 
It should work, just make sure you have selected the Toslink input on your Sony integrated player,could be aux 1 or something to that effect - if you hear the sound from ps3 then that is the right one :)...
