My IT department is about to purchase me a replacement notebook, and I would like to make a recommendation to them insofar as the specification goes.

I use my notebook primarily for opening, viewing and editing LARGE (>3Mb) Word 2007 documents, Excel Spreadsheets and Powerpoint Presentations. It should be noted that more often than not I have 2-3 of the size Word 2007 docs open, plus a couple of spreadsheets and the odd presentation. I prepare all marketing documentation for our firm which includes proposals, brochures, flyers and letters, often copying sections between documents, so I need to have them all open.

I also use Adobe Acrobat Pro to make "smart" PDF's, and sometimes assembling a single PDF from 20-30 Office Documents. This could take very long on a basic machine, and time is something I do not always have.

Could I please have some idea of the specs for a machine (notably the processor (Core2Duo or Quad?), RAM and GPU (if it makes a difference).

I might be limited to HP but lets see what our IT guys will say. My budget is no more than R18K.

Go for an HP 8710P, its got a 17 inch monitor! I wouldn't worry about the GPU (quadro NVS 320M), RAM (2gigs) or CPU (T9300), it should be sufficient. With a CarePack and bag it should be under R18k....

Get a notebook with a P8600 processor and 4GB RAM on a 64bit OS. You won't be sorry.
