Orange Mobile coming to SA?

I personally think that we need another network, but it has to be a big player - not something like your CellC and Virgin. We need a network to be a serious competition to MTN and Voda! I bet there's a cartel between these two to inflate the telephony costs! Seriosly! SA's telephony costs are ridiculous to say the least, yet consumers say the market is saturated? I'm dissappointed! There is no reason why MTN and Voda can't reduce their costs, but they won't, know why, they only care about raking in $$, yeah rightfully so, but this is way off the norm in other developing countries! The cost are high and the post sale service is $hit, some on guys!

the problem with a massive company like Orange Mobile coming into South Africa is that they'll have to build thousands of Signal stations and lay cabling... Something that Voda/MTN have had 15 years to do, and they haven't fully covered South Africa... So If Orange came into SA, then they'd have to spend shyte loads of cash, and they not even sure they'll make their money back...

If I was a large company with this proposal on my desk, I would be having my legs go weak, it seems like quite a gamble, and the yields don't even look that tasty, I mean, if they capture 20% of market share, that's like only like 8 or so million, and only a couple of those people are gonna be making hour long calls, they rest of that 8 million will be people who get paid low salaries or their parents got them the phone...

It just seems like a risky move to me, but I'm not saying it wouldn't be good for us consumers, but it just seems like they putting too many eggs in one basket if they come here

Having said that - you never know... companies do tend to look in the really long term (at least the ones that are any good) so it might just be worthwhile for them. We wont know until we actually get another provider.
 
Orange and T-Mobile no longer exist in the UK. They are now merged as EE (Everything Everywhere).

The likelihood of Orange coming to South Africa is low but not impossible. They are already in nine other African countries ! They have the financial clout to build the infrastructure and are extremely good at marketing... They wouldn't just give MTN/Vodacom a run for their money, they would also target Cell C. They could of course look at 8.ta with a view to an agreement on using Telkom infrastructure initially. The downside would be the sickening orange logos on their stores! Even worse than the yellow MTN ones!

Virgin Mobile SA signed their fate shortly after launch by ignoring independent cellular outlets and normal retail stores such as PEP etc! VNO's don't seem to do so well outside of Europe for some reason...

It would surprise me if they didnt take advantage of the renewed brand interest they're getting as a result from being the main AFCON sponsor.
 
I wouldn't be thinking they are the knights on white horses riding into SA to save the day.

Their network in Senegal is pretty shocking and no service is fairly common. Sometimes the whole country for several hours, recently it was down for a whole working day.

I don't know if it's still the same, but last year in Cameroon I was paying about R170 for 500mb. So not cheap either. Edit : that's for a calender month with no carry over btw.
