ORB ISP FEEDBACK

lol yeah linux distros ofcourse what else could it be :D

most of my good seeded torrents downloaded already so just left with some not so good seeded torrents now and ofcourse those take forever and a day to get.

torrent speed last night was up and down mostly because the stuff wasnt seeded to good but http downloads seemed to be flying at line speed at times.

so far so good no complaints as yet :)

@milomak
Its a one price package which is provisioned on cybersmart, so it includes the data and the line, and we are unable to split it.

the question though is what prevents you guys (orb and rtl) from providing the service without you having my line?

Then I'm pretty sure you guys are going to lose out on a lot of business. Pricing is intriguing but the move my line concept is a big no-no for me.

that still doesn't answer the question of why you want my line. yes i understand that is how it is packaged. but why?

what are you offering me by asking me to transfer my line to you?

Love to know swell

The reason for moving your line to us is that , you will receive the best performance on our uncapped accounts on the Cybersmart network, and we are able to technically manage it with out the run around.

19Redundancy
19.1 Unless otherwise stated Orb ISP has a non-redundancy policy, these accounts will not be operational during a network failure.

This is in regards to our basic adsl packages, which is why its provided at a cheaper rate.

i was able to use the mweb network without moving my line to them. why is it any different with the cybersmart network?

webafrica doesn't require me to move my line if i want to use their network.

This question keeps arising and has been answered before.

it certainly hasn't been answered in this thread though. maybe you can point me in the direction where the answer lies.

look if you do not want my money, i have no qualms with that.

There are two reasons why ISP's like to include line rental.

1. They pay telkom a wholesale line rental rate which is less than you pay. This makes them an extra R60 or so per customer. By making some added money from the line rental portion they can charge less on the data portion which allows them to drop the overall price of the bundle.

2. Customers stay longer if the isp provides line rental. If you stay longer they make more money overtime which means they can offer nice short term specials relying on loyalty and later profits to subsidize the initial loss. Loyalty makes them money which they frankly need, especially in an environment where telkom charges them an arm and a leg for IPC and high volume customers lose them a lot of money.

In both cases it leads to an increase in revenue which ultimately gives them room to drop prices if they choose to.

For the above reasons Cybersmart don't like doing the data only thing and try to get as many people as possible onto bundle packages - i can't say i blame them.

They could offer a data only product but then they would have to charge more.

With the combined package we can provide a reduced cost to our clients.
Also with the line with us you will receive the best performance on our uncapped accounts on the Cybersmart network, and we are able to technically manage it with out the run around.

So what I am basically hearing here is this:

1. we hope to get some margin off you due to the fact we are willing to charge slightly less than telkom on the line rental
2. In return for that, you will have to suffer the inconvenience of trying to switch back to telkom when you become dissatisfied with our service
3. the savings i might make may be wiped out by a prolonged process where i have no internet access while my line is transferred back to telkom
4. i am promised better speeds, yet there is no evidence that speeds suffer when the ISP doesn't have my line

you may have picked up i am a bit sceptical on this whole line issue thing

i happen to be on openweb gold and they seem to be able to control my line eg reset port.

which makes me ask, is your business model based on the line rental?

I think it is ckear your business model doesn't suit my needs but i think you are trying to bull5h1t me with why you need my line

geez you guys seem to be picking on the little guy here, ORB are new to the isp game, why not ask these questions to those providers that have been around longer ? TRL etc

at least give them a few months to prove themselves before attacking their product because of the line issue...

i have only great service from them so far and really don't think they should be criticized because they offer packages that include line rental, many others isp's have been offering the same for quite a while now but i doubt they were getting this type of response.

too many fanboys in my opinion, your isp may be great for you but why criticize ORB then if you have no intention of using their products ? the line issue has been explained don't kick a dead horse.

right, back to the real intention of this thread - FEEDBACK

i've been noticing that while my account is connected i'm actually not ... i cant access anything not even my router even though it says ORB connected on bridge mode. i have to re start my pc and reboot my router to get it REALLY connected again ... quite annoying and has me worried because i leave my connection on 24/7 even when i am at work. i would hate to come home from work and realize that my stuff hasn't downloaded because the connection has basically frozen :(

not sure what the problem is ... could be line or the account (isp)

sent an email to support hopefully it will get sorted soon

Hi Milomak,

As previously mentioned, OrbISP is a reseller of TRL Technologies.

1. You do get a rebate on your adsl line rental and by transferring your line to us we are able to better assist you when you require technical support as we have are able to reset your port etc. without contacting Telkom - saving you time, money and frustration.

2. Should you ever wish to cancel, your line is transferred back to Telkom within 4 to 6 working days.

3. For some reason a large amount of users are under the impression that they won't have internet access when a line is transferred back to Telkom / or to the ISP.
This is not true. There are NO downtime whatsoever.

4. There may not be evidence for this but the speed of our uncapped accounts do outperform most competitor offerings in the market, especially IS-based uncapped accounts.

No, the business model is not based on line rental. It's a win-win situation when you transfer your line to us as you get a rebate on the monthly line rental as well as better support should you ever experience a problem.

You can still use other ISP accounts after your line has been transferred - you are not locked-in in any way.

So in short, we don't offer uncapped services without your line being transferred to us. This is just how our uncapped offerings have been designed.

I trust that this post would answer all your questions regarding the line transfers.

Feel free to let me know if you have any further questions ;)
