Hi

so i decided to take a chance and try orb-isp

i signed up for the uncapped\unshaped 10mb account

i will provide feedback in this thread once the account is activated, if you already have an account with them please feel free to provide feedback in here as well.

telkom is busy upgrading my line so hopefully i'll get to test everything today :D

i plan on using about 200gb a month so hopefully that will fall well below their fup\aup limit but time will tell.

looking forward to testing this ...

hope you have 10mb in your area :p

you also need transfer line to them can take a few days maybe, not sure ow it works :)

have 4mb in my area unfortunately but thats good enough for me :)

about the transfer of the line, i thought about it for a long while and decided to take a chance plus i could do with the extra saving a well

my only concern is the fup\aup limited which could come back to haunt me

the line transfer thing stopped me in my tracks.

also don't trust that fup/aup

well i guess this thread will come in handy for potential customers then :)

after 3 months we should have a good idea what the limit is. i'm hoping the 200gb wont be too much although i really dont think 200gb on that account is alot.

@ryu
Thanks for the chance, we will endeavor to make it a painless and pleasant experience.

You know, this whole "you need to move your line to us" bit is annoying beyond belief. You do know that should you ever wish to move your line back to Telkom or some other ISP, that they will actually CANCEL your line, basically forcing you to re-apply for ADSL. I'm still stuck with SAOL because of this, since I can't afford an extended downtime right now.

If I had to do it all over again there is no way in hell that I would EVER move my line to any ISP ever again. You should think long and hard before taking this step.

Hi,

Not all ISPs operate the same. While some ISPs might cancel your line, we transfer the line back to Telkom and the client won't experience any downtime.

And no, you don't have to apply for adsl again if the line is transferred back to Telkom (at least with us you don't have to).

The whole process normally takes between 4 to 6 working days.

Sounds great Reuben.

However if you are unfortunate to be stuck at SAOL like D.B.Cooper and myself, cant you offer us a unshaped/uncapped package only without the line rental?
Having our lines terminated from SAOL could result in DSL ports in our area being full and we end up with no DSL at all.

What really irks me though is that before I signed up with them I queried them via email about the procedure they following with regards to moving back to Telkom. I was assured that moving my line back would be a smooth and seamless procedure. Of course, things are a little different now. By little I mean totally different story. And what's worse is that they fed my pretty much the same line as Reuben.

You can probably understand why I'm leery to trust any ISP with my line again. At least with your line at Telkom you're free to try any ISP you like, and if their performance isn't up to scratch it's off to a new one. Which is probably the reason MOST ISP's lock you in this way. Reuben's may be different, and if so, good for him. But my experience has left me soured on the whole idea.

Edit: Now that you mention it, I should actually check if there are any spare ports available in my area. Would be pretty funny if they cancelled my line only to be told a month later that there are no more ports available after re-applying.

Im in the exact same boat buddy!
Who are you going to join?

As we are a TRL Reseller our policy regarding the adsl line transfer is the same, we do not cancel it, it just gets passed back to Telkom if you decide to cancel with us.

managed to test a lil last night and it was quite awesome :D had to disconnect after an hour or two because we had a terrible lighning storm and didnt want to blow my router again ...

big up to telkom for upgrading me within a few hours ! only required 1 phone call.

the line while connected was quite good on torrents and especially good on http downloads although i never reached line speed on either but i guess the storm could have caused a problem somewere.

hopefully tonight i'll get to do a better test on http downloads but currently getting between 130 to 280kbps which is good enough for me :)

the question though is what prevents you guys (orb and rtl) from providing the service without you having my line?

What do you plan on using that 200gb on? Thier AUP is pretty explicit when it comes to copyrighted materials...
