Hi guys.

I want to know how important is having the original packaging with regards to your warranty? I am in the process of buying a second hand PS3, but the seller might not have the original packaging. He does however have the proof of purchase slip from the store that he bought it from.

Thanks

I would suggest you try your hardest to get the packaging. It is vital in many shops that this is needed to exchange. Even if it is slightly torn, the managers are very sticky with this. Especially since its a such a high end item.

I see. But wouldnt the proof of purchase help to convince the manager tat the product was purchased there?

No, I can say honestly say that many people have chanced their luck trying to bring something back that wasn't from my shop. I've seen it too many times and when you then need to return it to the supplier, they (suppliers) then dispute it cause it doesn't have the same number (serial or otherwise) as the ones they supplied to you. Then you are left having a R5k paperweight and a hole in your bank account.

I would suggest if you are keen on the purchase then maybe you find out the shop name and what their policy is on return in respect of PS3's. If the seller wants it sold, he should give out the information. Otherwise I would be sceptic...

What rubbish.
A lot of things say, on the packaging, that it should be recycled.
Also, I am sick and tired of a pile of boxes in my house.

Retailers need to have better control - and be done with it. If it is such an issue, write the serial number on the till slip and stamp it.

I think the guy bought his PS3 from toys'r'us. Anybody have any dealings with them regarding a similar issue?

Could a possible solution to this not be a situation where the store owner takes down the serial number of the damaged goods and then contacts their supplier to verify that the serial number is from their batch that was supplied before actually taking possession of the damaged item?

That is the way it should be done. But in SA, everything is too much trouble, and the consumer always needs to be shafted.
I can accept needing a till slip - but not the original packaging. That is bollocks.

My sentiments exactly

+1. I can even understand requiring the packaging if you want to swop it out within the first 7 days or whatever but beyond that its just stupid.
