I need to convert Microsoft Outlook ost to pst format from time to time.
Is there a free utility you can recommend pls?

There ain't no such thing dude, well... there are ... but they are all expensive scams.

You see... the problem is, that only way to convert OST to PST is while the original OST file is connected to the Outlook exchange server where your mail is actually stored.

Once the client is disconnected from the server, there is no way to retrieve the stuff.

The requirement is in fact for the machine to NOT be connected to the exchange server at the time of conversion.

Another manual and time-intensive option is to create a pst file to be used for backup purposes and then manually copy over the emails from the folders.

There is another utility that I used to use a few years back, but just can't think of the name now.

What exactly is the purpose of this pst file?
Do you have access to the exchange server?

The request was post by a visiting friend. Not exactly sure what is the purpose or how much access he has to the server, but as I understood it a certain state agency would add new email accounts, but would not backup the OST file and then apparently all previous emails would disappear. So I think his access might be limited.

Apologies if my story makes no sence, but I can check with him again.

Have you personally actually used any of those tools in a real world environment to successfully covert a users emails to PST? And all of his emails were actually there when you were done?

Yes, I actually have. Granted that sometimes it is a hit&miss affair, but I checked against email count to verify.

OK, well I have to say I doubt that since no tool has ever worked 100% for me.
Maybe you just got lucky, or maybe the client was still connected to the Exchange Server.

I once had a messed up Exchange server with Outlook client to make use of OST's and PST's, I could convert most OST to PST, But like Aquadyne said is was a hit miss situation, Lost some recovered some.

Dont understand why you need to do this, are you recovering a site ? OST's can grow quite large as the old saying goes PST's should not exceed 2.5 GB

No not recovering a site. As I mentioned before a friend came to visit and he asked me if I knew about free software that could do it. I had a bit of a look and decided to ask all the wise people here, but it was on a Saturday or Sunday and most of the answers came in after he already left.

Networking is not my thing and I know zero about exchange.

All I know that it is a goverment setup and something about new email accounts that are setup by SITA (Is it still SITA?) that can not access old emails on the system, although they are still there. The agency that do the setups, basically does a less than stellar job if I understood correctly.

Not sure if this when the network is down or what. Will try to get more info.

Need to tell that in real world there is no such free tool to do the conversion job from offline ost file to outlook.

Speaking from the personal experience, when i left my previous job i need to convert ost emails from disconnected Exchange server to PST. 2 years back in invested in a ost converter software and till date it is working in good conditions without posing any issues to my system.

Even I personally use this app time to time to convert ost files to pst files

you may explore: http://www.pcvita.com/ost-converter.html

must say that, application works even when network is down, exchange is disconnected or crashed. I have full access to my ost data. What I have said was my personal experience, rest google is always best option to find out such utilities.

Kudooz :) :)

I had search on Google, no one offering free ost to pst converter, everyone is selling free demo version of ost to pst converter. Some of well known companies are:

RecoveryFix for OST to PST Converter
Kernel of OST Converter
Stellar info
systool

Thanks

In all honesty, Garyvdh is correct, there is no real solution, but this depends on the setup.

Kernel recovery works, I know companies who use this in success to administrate OST’s/Exchange storage, have not really seen this in data recovery situations.

I did not want to comment earlier, we use Kroll Ontrack and is a partner, but really it is VERY expensive… We rarely used this due to the price tags and depending on the data recovery purpose.

Cannot help with freeware, bunch of scams really…
