OT: ANC Elective Conference

CR new ANC President

We have a new president Cyril Ramaphosa, hope our country will start to move into a positive direction.

Any last words for our famous former president Jacob Zuma. I'm not into polictics but hope CR will uplift our country.

No, he can still do that. But he's on borrowed time now. Mabuza's switch cost him a win.

I know what you mean, and all that. And of course we hope for some sort of turn away from madness...

I just can't get excited about this, because what is above all depressing is that we live in system and country where the character of the president makes a difference. A government of men and not of laws.

I'd much rather we had a polity where it matters not a jot who the prez is. Like Switzerland say. I've had my fill to my back teeth of professional politicians of whatever stripe, party, or shade.
 
So with all the unity talk the votes show a split almost down the middle.

How long before they split.


So Cyril is president of the ANC but Zuma is president of the country - how does that make any sense ?

Well you have to start at the top.

Zuma, with grade two and incapable of counting to 10, isn't one you'd have running a country. Cyril on the other hand at least looks better on paper, and would be a better person to take the captains seat in the next elections.

Wishing we were like Switzerland is a bit far fetched. Getting rid of Zuma however, isn't.

If you think about it, President means that CR gets to pick the cabinet. That is a huge amount of power. The others have leadership positions in the ANC but not necessarily in the new government formed in 2019.

So, it's not all bad, in fact it is a pretty good outcome.

I mean, think about it, power is divided in the ANC, so what? As long as the better of the two candidates won the presidency.

That being said, the only concerning thing is whether either Ace or Mabuza will use this opportunity for further their own political careers and one day take the presidency themselves.
 
Dissapointed about Mabuza, Magashule and Duarte. Small consolation that Magashule and Duarte will not be in Government and Mabuza having no real power as we have seen Ramaphosa being so helpless the last 10 years.

And the ANC set a precedent for themselves by allowing JZ to pick his cabinet as he pleased, now they can't prevent CR from ringing the changes as he pleases. That's if the ANC wins in 2019 obviously. But they took the first step today towards staying in power IMO

Because politicians are not professionals in Switzerland?

Direct democracy exists in Switzerland only in some tiny cantons where it is made possible because the population is not higher than a few tens of thousands.
