Called the stealerships to book the SO's car in for a service, because she doesnt want to take her car anywhere else besides a stealership. The guy there says its a oil change etc service, so I ask him to check just to make sure. "Oh wait.." he says....gearbox oil needs to be changed...

So a R1500 service just jumped to a R4500 estimate. Bliksem. :wtf: Is it really that hard to change the oil in a gearbox, I assume its tucked away so is quite a job?

Probably labour that made the cost jump. Take it to a Car Service City for the Gearbox Oil

If it's an automatic, the oil levels are critical to ensure smooth changes, and it is quite a lot of work to get it spot on, and if it's manual, it probably doesn't need changing anyway. It might include servicing of valves and other fiddly bits, depending on the technology used. But R3000 is pretty steep isn't it...

There is a ton of complaints against car service city. Never used them myself, but thanks to the horror stories I never will.

You just want your gearbox oil changed (manufacturer recommendation), not a service or overhaul. What's wrong with Car Service City, Bosch Service, etc for that matter?

Go to carforums.co.za and ask someone to recommend a good mechanic in your area. I found a miracle mechanic that way who does not overcharge and delivers top personalised service even on very complicated problems. I will never go to a stealership again.

Bosch Service- nothing, I would heartily recommend.
Car Service City- not so much.

Which service is this? I had my 120 000km service done at Honda West Rand on the Type R and the cost was R3600 in total. This is still a lot I know, but R4500 is more.

Phone a few Honda dealers and see who is the cheapest, the prices do vary.

If it's a manual they are ripping you a new one at that price!

It's no more than a 15min job and the oil is not expensive and laced with diamond shavings.

An automatic would be more expensive as the oil is more expensive, time involved is more as well as you have to get the volumes right at the correct temperature.

Yep, 120 000km "minor" service to replace pollen filters, oil+air filters, new oil and apparently new gearbox oil. Hmmm, let me enquire as to that R4500 estimate....seems a tad much.
