Outrage over Obama's bow

lol @ this thread. Hissy fits over some people having a hissy fit over something so trivial.

I'm more concerned about his lunatic mentor, advisers and confidants than a few loony bloggers......

Just Obama sucking up - of course he will chastise that new PM.

The term 'Orientals' is best not used in the company of Asians...

just for what it's worth.....
I've worked in the far east for many years, and they had no gripe about being called Asian's, oriental or far easterners.

In this case the term oriental was used specifically to exclude Pakistan, India etc. from the discussion (incl. Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea).

Dipping a flag and politely bowing to a Japanese person when greeting him are two entirely different things.

What Obama did was simple good manners, and any American business man who has been to Japan to meet management from another company would have bowed in the same manner.

GAWD these bloody Republican nitpickers are totally pathetic!

It's not as trivial as it seems. For one the Japanese businessmen bow back and one definitely does not have to bow to them - they see through this and see it as patronising a gaijin would never learn the customs anyhow, for another Obama is the executive head of state of the US, the Emperor even though still considered a god by many in Japan, is still a ceremonial head. I didn't see this, but it would be ok if the Emperor bowed back otherwise it is inappropriate as it is one head of state/king/emperor submitting to another one - even in ceremony. Does the US president bow to the European monarchs too?

The president represents the United States and not just himself. That's the role of the head of state.

It also looks cheap - it's Obama sucking up. He represents the US, he should know better. Same would go for bows to any other monarch.

Robably considering his ludicrious treatment( DVDs from Wall Mart) of Brown.. Seems you're better off being an advisory. Praising Putin, chumming it up with Charvez etc. But this is typical left modus operandi. Reach out to thugs and despots while snubbing your allies. They're all "equal" after all

Except in this case it's the Reps doing the hissy fit.

Wasn't there a thread about the liberals throwing a ' hissy fit ' over some faked video.....

That knife doesn't cut both ways apparently.

Major objections to the term are fairly recent, and so it still sees frequent use, often by people unaware that objections to it exist. As awareness of the cultures in Asia has increased, its usage has decreased. Its occasional replacements, such as "Asian" and "East Asian", can also be seen as offensive by others. It can still be found in the mainstream media, though less frequently than in decades past. When used to describe Asian foods and other products, it raises fewer objections, and this remains one of the most acceptable ways of using the term. The atmosphere of sensitivity surrounding "oriental" suggests that it should be used with caution.

Correct, which is the same in Korea and most areas in China.

It's not as simple as that, the degree and length of bow denotes superiority vs inferiority - just as there are different types of bows - formal vs informal vs very formal. If they had similar bows it would be ok, if Obama's was disproportionate it would not be. Besides the US is an egalitarian society which accepted the handshake - hence you don't find titles in the US like in Britain which is still a class society - Sir, Lord, Baron, Duke, OBE, etc.

It may also offend the other party if they feel it is condescending.

What pisses me off endlessly is that the americans think they are better than the rest!

And that is just utter krap.

Would you like to live in a housing estate, like the Desperate Housewives movie lot, or would you rather live in a Walled, Gated and Arm Guard patrolled enclave like the many in Gauteng...

You're supposed to think that your country is the best in the world.
There is something seriously wrong with your mindset if you think that there is a problem with thinking like that.

That's just stupid. Oriental as someone already has mentioned, means association with a region. Like saying someone comes from the Iberian Peninsula, person could be either Portuguese or Spanish.

People having a nappy rash over nothing. You want insult, I can give you some good insults if you really want to be offended. Damn PC lot.

*EDIT* and no I don't mean you Dave, just PC'ness in general.

It's a sign of respect. Everyone here in Korea and Japan bows to elders, or people of high positions, or someone you respect, or just in general a way to greet.

Absolutely ridiculous comment.

America

You're supposed to think that your country is the best in the world.

TRUE

There is something seriously wrong with your mindset if you think that there is a problem with thinking like that.

Americans used to be very aware of how their country was different in respect of the political foundation of the country ie Liberty -- Constitution -- Bill of Rights etc.

These concepts and this philosophy was a BIG deal for them.

It appears that this all went out the window with 9/11 and the Patriot Act.

There is nothing wrong with thinking that your country is the greatest -- as long as you really know what is going on in your country.
( Time moves on , Empires come and go -- I am not so sure the Americans still have stuff to be proud of. )

and

Not slagging off everyone else and telling them how useless they are ( with the exception of Zimbabwe :D )

America, being the world's melting point, is the most successful nation on earth by far. It is not krap but truth, they are the best. You are using an American CPU on an American operating system, and using English (not German) and communicating with us on a mostly US invention.

To be honest, average Americans are probably the most fair people on earth.

Obama is the Emperor's equal despite many Japanese still considering him a god - I kid you not. If any bowing occurs, it should be equal, if it's not - it is a sign that the United States (not just a guy called Obama) is bowing before another country/country's regent and is showing it's of a lower position. Come on, you should know this. This is all symbolic but people representing a nation should act properly.

I agree with the American's who are upset.
