Outwitting music pirates

They continue to completely miss the point don't they.

World Music Expo general director Gerald Seligman told delegates to the Mo****o music conference yesterday that about 95% of the downloading of music was being done "without a penny exchanging hands".

He said the new trend whereby the public downloads music dictated terms and artists, record labels and distributors were the losers in the process.

According to ringtonia.com, pirates cost the music industry $1m a day. "It costs the industry billions of dollars," said Seligman. There was a "growing consensus" among people in the industry that intellectual property rights holders needed to unite in approaching digital distributors, internet and mobile service providers, he said.

What is the point? I personally think music should be freely downloadable from the artist's website and cheap per song. I'll buy for about R2-R3 per song

If they start freeing up their product and stop selling out to distibution companies that dont distribute properly they will make heaps of dough! The music will distribute itself if it's good, its been proven!... They dont have to pay distribution companies millions :)

I love how they always throw these fairy-tale make-believe numbers around. It's like a magic trick the way they pull them out of thin air.
 
Thankfully with the music that I listen to, the artists encourage downloading and then if you're happy with it, buying the product. A lot of them also have up to half an album freely available on their sites. So mainstream music ....... kiss my *** ;):D
 
I will say my shower songs are worth $100 per song, so if a few people download it a day I will lose a Million Dollars a day. Man I would have been so rich. It must be the pirates! :p Just because they download it doesn't mean it is any good. ;)

They will not outsmart the pirates arrrggghhh!!! :p

The problem is that they create these security measures and then it lasts for around a month(if that long) before some hacker cracks it :)

Also they should really bring the prices down a bit.
 
You'll never kill piracy, don't even try, rather try be the better option.

Offer chances to win concert tickets with buying CDs, give support, free previews, community fun, free chat with the artists.

Reward being legit rather than punish (DRM)
 
If these idiots had made music affordable in the first place then they wouldn't be in this situation. Screw them!
 
Actually ... lots of penies change hands. The telecom providers make loads of cash outta selling bandwidth :D Theyre coining it.
 
Oi sounds like a lot of unresearched pipe dreams to me. I did not read anything in that article which tells me that there was a lot of brain activity doing the rounds in that meeting / conference. It sound more like a lot of off the cuff ideas thrown around, and everyone waiting around hoping that someone would do something about anythig. Only problem, no-one would probably come to the party and nothing will be done...till the next meeting then.
 
HAHAHAHAHA $1m dollars day. Billions a year. Math is not a good subject for anyone looking to enter into the music industry.

Btw - I remember when my friend and I could buy two pies, two cokes (big cans), smokes and packet of simba chips for R20. How about a comparison of yesterdays prices with the inflation figgered in.
