Overclocking a e6600 CPU

Hi

I am very new to overclocking CPU's so I am looking for some advice

This is my current System
Intel 2.4 e6600 CPU
4x1 Gig 667 RAM
Biostar P965 TForce Motherboard
Nvidia 8800 GTS 320 meg
1TB Seagate harddrive

I want to overclock it but I don't want to buy a new cooler so I must be able to use the standard cooler

I have read a few forums about this and it seams to me is I can safely bring this CPU up to 3.2 Ghz

Does anyone have a similar config that can give me some advice on how to do it and what to watch out for.

Do I just set the Multiplier to 320 and that's all what else must I chance

You need a program to check your CPU temperature, and one to stress it. Coretemp and Prime95 will do.

Your current CPU cooler should be fine. You don't want temperatures going higher than 70-80 degrees when stressed.

You overclock by increasing your FSB. Right now it is 266. The CPU multiplier is 9, 266 x 9 = 2.4ghz. But if you increase it, your RAM runs faster as well.

You may need to decrease your RAM multiplier because your RAM won't be able to handle such a high speed.

All this is in your BIOS settings.

For the sake of correctness I have to mention that it's the bus speed, not the Front Side Bus. The FSB = Bus Speed x 4. So you may see the label in the BIOS as "Bus speed" or something similar.

Other than that, solid advice.

Most likely not, you should be able to hit 3.2GHz with the stock voltage. If not, just raise the voltage by one increment, test for stability, if it fails raise it by another. Repeat.
 
I actually tried it last night

I set the increase the clock speed from 266 to 360 one shot and left the other setting on default

As soon as I pressed save settings in the BIOS the pc switched off and restarted twice then the BIOS undid my change

So I have learnt this is not the way to go.

Will try in smaller incriments it could be that the Memory speed got to hight I will have to manually turn that back down to 667 Mhz I have it on Auto now.

I will also download the apps to test Stability and Monitor temperatures
 
Too big an overclock in one go! Your RAM probably couldn't handle it. Depends on the multiplier, like I said. So let's assume your RAM multiplier was 2.5.
2.5 x 266 = 667
2.5 x 360 = 900
that's probably too fast for your ram. If you put the multiplier on 2x you will have 720 MHz which is probably more realistic.

Ok remember always overclock in small increments!
 
yeah learnt that one yesterday

Got a bit ahead of myself not a nice fealing when you hear that click from the power supply when press yes for save config in bios

thank goodness the motherboard in clever enough to reset it back to a working config.
 
Ok I gave it another try

I can get the bus speed up to 305 which gives me 2745 Mhz

The loaded running temp is 57 Deg c

I can't push it more than this as soon as I go to 310 the PC will not even boot

Any ideas what I need to change

The funny thing the CPU Volts says Startup then if you try change it is has +0.012 and so on

I treud chang the CPU voltage to +0.012 but it still would not boot

Any ideas what I can try
 
What's your memory frequency? Your memory likely can't handle high speeds, so change the multiplier to keep it low.
 
I actually set the memory to 667 Mhz

I took it off its original setting of Auto which was pushing to to 800 Mhz

Do you think I might have to push the voltage up more its only going up by 0.012V which is a very little change

The CPU is currently running at 1.328V
 
you can underclock your ram/keep voltage the same and try increase multiplier to OC the PC
 
I can't increase the multiplyer anymore its already on 9

I have managed to get it to a stable 310

I increase volatage by 0.025v

I tried 315 but it became unstable I then tried increasing the votage by +0.032v but it was still unstable

I think I have hit the peak here don't know what else to try

The Load temperatures are at 58 I think I might bring it down to 305 again and leave the stock votage it was running cooler
 
Found a nice and stable 310 setting

Dropped the votage to stock and set the memory frequency to 533 looks ok and temperatures have come down from 58 to 55

Think thats it for me and this overclock

Anyone else have an idea
 
Is the RAM really running at 533? On my board it is always some multiplier of the bus speed, here 310 MHz
 
yes you right the ram is running at about 610 or something it shows it under the setting where it is set to run at 533
