Overclocking: Core i7 Vs. Phenom II

Thats what i always say abe, buy what you can afford but also buy clever. I have the cash to buy the i7 but i would never because its a rip off for the performance i would achieve. I have never even looked at amd cpu since core 2 came out because they could not overclock well and core 2 was just miles ahead in performance. This new amd cpu does look very good i would say and overclocks as well as intel. So amd have done really well i thought until i saw the price. Still 4k for a cpu is not bad considering intel you basically need a whole new rig :)

The way pricing is going atm if I upgrade anytime soon, my Budget ses AMD ;)
 
Core i7 is going nowhere, so any rumours stating so are false. What is happening is that a smaller LGA socket is being released, with less pins (1150 something I think, can't remember exact number) I'm not sure if the smaller chip will be called i5, that's news to me.

LGA775 will fade away slowly, but it won't vanish overnight. LGA775 has actually been a very long standing socket, with multiple generations of chip able to work in it. Bar a few earlier motherboards that couldn't run Core 2, LGA775 has been good for Intel.

AMD has changed sockets quite a bit since those days. Socket 939, 940, AM, AM2
 
LGA775 has been a long standing socket but if you take into account all the different chipsets and which will and will not support different cpu's then you see a heck of a lot of expensive changes.

Anyway i7 is great for renderring purposes but according to the Toms review an AMD 940 klaps an i7 920 even though it is 4 cores versus 8. [email protected] and the [email protected] if i recall correctly.

i7 destroys AMD in every other test though. One thing to note is that Phenom ii was brought out to compete with core 2 not i7 so i think they are doing ok at the moment but they need an i7/5 killer which i think they are still far away from

Lol amd dont need a i7/5 killer,coz right now theyr doing awesome doubt many people will just upgrade to i7/5 overnight and with the intro of the Phenom II, amd are way ahead...but then again if u have money to waste go ahead :)
 
Nope they not ahead, yet and i5 will be way cheaper (apparently) :)

I did not waste my money on my i7 but it will not stop me getting a Phenom ii system as well just to test the renderring against an i7
 
In terms of the average gamer they are best performance for price atm :)....

Intel cheaper than AMD....less lies plz lol

AMD is the way to go imo spent two years with intel before seeing the light...and with i5 would u have to cough up 2-3k for a mobo?
 
Oh and btw when ur done with your testing the Phenom II system,would u mind sending it to me so i can uhh... test it :P
 
rotflmao it will prob end up in the render farm along with the other quads that ae not used for design work :)

p.s. i never said Intel cheaper
 
Then again though when AMD brings out the AM3 boards we will be in the same situation as Intelites are now, semi expensive cpu, expensive board and expensive ram. So only good thing about Phenom ii at the moment is the fact that they drop into AM2 boards whilst i7 needs a new board.
 
Amd is fighting back am loving it:P As a amd fan am so happy w00t.
And this is a good thing even if you don't like amd , this industry needs competition.

The AM3 cpus work in AM2+ boards too. Also AMDs aren't gonna that expensive. You get rely on that.

Maybe go look up what will not work if you run an am3 cpu on an am2 board, not something you would want to do.

QX by the time amd release their am3 cpu's i would imagine ddr3 will be around 30-50% cheaper than it is now.

hmmm... I read that an AM3 (all the 3 digit amd processors) will only work on AM3 and AM2+ boards (because of the power demands or something). This is clever because if you want upgrade, then buy a new cpu, not a whole new system.

However, I think that ddr3 will improve the amd cpu's by 5% maybe 10% because of the massive increase in bandwidth.

Also, you must remember that the amd processors don't mind the voltage of the ram, unlike the intel i7's... so you could get ram with tighter timings @ higher volts for the AMD systems(IIRC AMD cpu's perform better with tighter timings and lower latencies, and I would assume the intel's would performer better too)

Am3 cpu's will work on am2 boards but you will lose 2 key features, one being the power management thing and i cannot find the other one will go google now for it.

I will buy amd but only when am3 comes out, no point spending 4k on a cpu now to find in a few months am3 cpu's which cost the same and perform better are out.

The HT speed is decreased.
