overclocking E8500 with P5Q Asus mobo .... ???

what happen to the good old days of changing a MHz here and there .... ???

someone please give me a start on coverclocking this machine with Asus P5Q mobo and E8500 CPU ... its confusing as hell and searching online does not help much ... its all greek to me ... :(

maybe im getting too old for this ****! :(

Firstly, how much do you want to overclock that sucker? That CPU is a POTENT overclocker, but it gets tricky the higher up you get... You should be able to get to +- 3,6/3,8Ghz without having to start changing voltages etc..

The best thing to do will be to overclock through the bios.
So when you boot your computer hit F1 or delete or watever to enter setup..
Im not familier with the bios settings of the P5Q but i would imagine that it would be under advanced setup or clock control ? And you want to bump the FSB up a bit . . .400FSB at 9,5x multiplier should give you 3,8Ghz . . But dont just set it to that, start small.And go up in increments of 5-10mhz at a time

not too much, more of just a tweak with standard cooling at the moment ... say 3.3GHz as a start

this P5Q: things called fsb boot strap etc etc ... im lost with this mobo, and someone with this board can help a lending hand it will be appreciated
 
Well let us know what options are available in that particular BIOS. Your motherboard manual will give a brief outline of what options are there.

I just want to re-iterate what Greylid said... Start small, and increase clock in small increments. Remember that increasing clock frequencies does not only influence the CPU. Among other things, your RAM will start to run at a faster frequency too. If you have poor quality RAM, it may not be able to handle this. You can always relax your RAM timings to accommodate. You may experience issues with your PCI bus (if it's not frequency-locked), you may have issues with USB synchronisation. This is all stuff you need to test out so that you don't break something. Hence the small increments
 
i got 4 gig DDR2 kingston 800Mhz memory

FSB frequency: easy enough but the options are 400Mhz, 333 Mhz, 266 Mhz nd 200 Mhz (cpu external frequency)... no in between

CPU ratio: its on 9.5x already, can only go lower

FSB strap to North Bridge: dunno what the hell this does ... it has option of 200Mhz, 266, 333, 400

DRAM timings:
CAS# Latency
DRAM RAS# to CAS# delay
DRAM RAS# percentage
DRAM RAS# precharge
DRAM RAS# activate to precharge time
RAS# to RAS# delay
Row Refresh cycle time
Write recovery time
read to recharge time

and the above has a number of settings under them ... there is a whole lot more under memory
other settings

DRAM static read control
DRAM read training
Mem. OC Charger
Ai Clock Twister
Ai Transaction Booster
CPU voltage
CPU PLL voltage
FSB termination voltage
DRAM voltage
NB Voltage
SB voltage
PCIE sata voltage
Load line calibration

yes figured that out if i increase the FSB my memory will increase also ... but is there a way to lock the FSB of the memory? sure i read this somewhere ... just a start, should i drop my mutiplier and then set 400MHz on the FSB ...
 
i saw an artical sumwhere earlier that said it had a 9,5 x multiplier, 400mhz bootstrap and a 400mhz FSB . . .That equates to 3,8Ghz . .Eish , confusing
 
well, if your fsb is running at 400mhz then that means that the memory can run at 1:1 ratio :D

my fsb is 333Mhz ... and ratio 1:1 :confused: ... dunno what you saying there ... greek to me ...

EDIT: ok wait ... say i push my FSB to 400 Mhz and drop my mutiplier to 8.5 to give me 3.4 GHz ... sooooooo with this ratio 1:1 my memory being 400Mhzx2=800MHz ... so my memory aint overclocked ... ok how do i change the ratio so thats its 1:1 and also can i change it to other values ... ????? :(

and what this "FSB strap to North Bridge" .... :(

AFAIK, it has something to do with keeping some of your clock frequencies separate so that things don't start going haywire
 
Sorry to burst your bubble here but Kingston ram is not going to do it for you.
You need good quality ram like TeamXtremes or Corsair,OCZ or even Mushkin to set you on the straight and narrow..
Been there ,done that.
If you can find Corsiar XMS DDR2- 667 ram modules , these babies will smoke your board.
Ive been able to clock these at 935 Mhz cl 4-4-4-10 on an Asus board.
Yes,I know, your not clocking the ram but the cpu..Does not matter,your ram is mediocre and will frustrate the crapiola out of your efforts.

Run the DDR2 800 at 1:1 and he has a 3.8 system, i do not see any frustration in that. The idea that value ram is crap has been disproved many times.

I run both corsair and kingston value ram in my rigs and have had no probs getting my E8400 to 4 gig, Q9550 to 3.8, Q6600 to 3.6 etc etc etc.

Ocing is about the mobo, psu and cooling including of course the cpu :p

Presently running a P5Q Deluxe, adamr which version of the board do you have, i shall look at my present settings and give you a shout :)
