My girlfriend and I have been saving for an overseas holiday - we should have around R60,000 by middle of next year.

Any ideas on where, and what to do? I was thinking Thailand for three weeks... not to concerned about 5-star luxury - but would like a decent holiday.

thailand is awesome, been there a few years ago. very nice beaches and islands. but 3 weeks might be a bit long for just there, travel around a bit. and i wouldn't recommend more than 3 days or so in bangkok, its very interesting to see, but i woudnt stay there to long.

Do you want to stay in one place, or travel around? If you don't mind moving around a bit, I'd recommend Italy - there's quite a few really great cities, but staying in any one of them for 3 weeks would probably get quite boring.

Yeh - thats why I'm asking - I was stuck in Singapore for two/three weeks - got a bit bored after awhile - and I was alone :(

ROFL - remember the budget: :) Italy is far from Thailand.

What I thought of doing is flying through Singapore, spending three/four days there, then to Thailand, do some local traveling, etc for about two weeks, and then seeing if we can fly back through Dubai, and spending a couple of days there.

Europe is probably going to be our second holiday, two years after.

3 weeks in Thailand is too long yeah. R60k can get you quite a bit and Thailand is pretty cheap right now.

I was looking around for myself and what got me excited was an eastern mediterranean trip around the greek isles, italy and croatia. Unbelievably beautiful. Croatia is one of the few places with a heavenly coastline that hasn't been messed up by tourism yet.

My brother did a tour of the East last year with his gf. Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar. It was more than 3 weeks and around your budget.

What about Zanzibar for 10 nights and then Thailand for 10? You could do that for R60k. I'm going to Zanzibar next month and there are some awesome 5 star fully inclusive deals. Plus some of the best scuba diving in the world. I'm hoping to dive with whale sharks.

What are you expecting from your holiday?

Take a Medditeraen Cruise. Don't be put off by the fact that cruising is for the elderly, its for everyone. The beauty is that you are unpacked and settled and you see a new place everyday. Suggest you start in Italy, Rome... Venice then Greece and Turkey. Try a 14 day one. Promise you won't regret it

What about Italy/Tuscany or Provence & Cote d'Azur in France, maybe Paris? Cliched, but so worth it. R60k should cover at least 2 weeks easily.

edit/ middle of the year is probably not a good time to go to Europe, it is tourist peak season

what about the following,, 1st 3 days in bangkok, followed by two weeks in Thailand followed by 3 days in hong kong. Did this two years back and worked out perfectly..

for that amount i would look at the mediterranian(spelling). islands around greece.

The tour sounds good - so does Zanzibar and then Thailand :) did your brother arrange the tour himself, or was it a preset thing?

Dude, for R60K you could spend 1 or 2 months travelling through southern africa.

... Don't think my leave covers that - and I've seen quite a bit of SA. :)

Yea Africa has amazing value. I had a dream holiday in Malawi. OMG it is stunning, Lake Malawi has one of Africa's best kept secrets - Mumbo Island. Check it out:

Thanks - I believe Kenya is also pretty good.

Pretty sure I'd get in trouble there :D

How did you save?

Girlfriend and I put money away each month? I actually told her it was going into a savings account - but its actually going into my car loan, better interest there... and I can withdraw the money thats paid in advance....

She gives me Rx amount per month, and I put in triple that.

Thanx. Now I just need to convince BF to stop spending. He is a real girl when it comes to shopping and spending:o
