Check out cruises, there are some amazing voyages you can do with that sort of dosh, esp world cruise segments and fly cruises. I would head for Hong Kong if I had money like that, base myself there and travel the region.

I can't imagine R60,000 going far these days...

Just heard that flights in and out of SA during that time (World Cup) are going to be almost double

My girlfriend and I have been saving for an overseas holiday - we should have around R60,000 by middle of next year.

Any ideas on where, and what to do? I was thinking Thailand for three weeks... not to concerned about 5-star luxury - but would like a decent holiday.

or you can fly into Singapore
spend a few nights there
go on a cruise for 4 nigths to cambodia/vietnam

South America:
4 nights rio or Buzios
5/7 nights Buenos Aires
1 night bariloche
2 day andean lake crossing
1night puerto montt
3 nights santiago

The biggest problem with June/July at the moment is none of the airlines have released seats for travel.
availability is having a significant impact on the price.

I'm also liking the S.America one - its different to the rest - I'd like to see the Amazon as well Maybe catch a piranha.

The flights might be an issue - worst case, we'd have to move the dates to December 2010, which will turn this into a European holiday - I want a decent white Christmas.

the flights are no problem.
2 options either malaysian airlines into buenos aires or sasa via soa paulo into rio.
internal flights can be arranged via a few options.

amazon is no issue, clients stayed in an eco village and went alligator spotting and fed piranhas.

Have you thought of maybe going to Taiwan instead?

Very cheap and plenty more to do. You can tour the whole island and it's very cheap if you prefer to use the local accommodation instead of the hotels. And the people are AWESOME !.

Barging in France? A very romantic holiday, you can have bikes on the boat, then use them to cycle into the towns every morning to buy food & wine from the markets for the day....

It's quite sobering when you see the personal reviews of a hotel compared to what the brochure portrays.
