So with the GT86 and possibly the 118i in the running, I've come to an impasse as I'm not sure whether a 2 seater will be suitable over the next 3-4 years. Dont have a family (kids and wife) but I'm kinda hesitant as I'm a tad worried that 2 seats will become an issue.

Currently have a Toyota, Kentucky Rounder shape :) and want to give(lend) that to my brother so he can go to varsity with.
Pro's and Con's of having a Coupe versus a sedan or hatchback.

Nothing wrong with the KIA Koup, 2 doors, seats 5 and has ample space!

with only about 32kw power difference to the 86!

I have a coupe. Only problem is when the girlfriend and her friends are out with me. I can't pick/drop of all of them up, just my girlfriend. Also picking up the girlfriend or friends from the airport is a problem due to lack of luggage space.

Those are the only two issues I've had in the last couple of years.

You forgot the Kia doesn't have RWD, and an amazing power to weight ratio.

You can't compare the 2. Although the Kia is an awesome "Sedan"

Luggage Space wise when I drive down to CT, it'll most prob be just me and my brother and we dont need that much lol. For day to day it'll hold just my lappy and maybe one or two grocery bags.

@SaiyanZ you have a 350Z right?

cons: the wider doors make it more difficult to get in and out in tight parking bays
i'd consider the fact that you can only transport 1 passenger a plus :) My previous car was a 5 door hatch, and the back seats were completely unused in 4 years.

Yep. Only two seats. At least a few people can squeeze into the back of a GT86. Just make sure you have skinny friends. I don't have that option so people have to end up calling taxis and making other travel arrangements which gets annoying at times. For instance when there is just the three of us out and my gf doesn't want to let her friend take a taxi alone.

As an only car a 2 door sports car is a bad idea. As a second car a 2 door sports car is WIN!

With my family they most probably might be but I can always then use the Corrolla or something.. The 86 has wide doors? Think I should go check it out again.

Thanks for the advice, in my group of friends I'm the smallest so at the very least 1 extra person wont be an issue I hope.

are you a taxi or taxi service??? (only joking!)

both me and my wive got coupe's and we're happy but we use a sedan when we ride together. and my 12 year old son love riding in the coupe's since they're convertable's.

when you got a lot of friend without cars or luggage its maybe not such a great idea. but many 3 door cars can take 5 adults without problems these days and got some space for luggage left as well!

in cape town there are only a few on the road. Im yet to see the latest model on the road. having said that, I was at KIA about 4 weeks back chatting to the salesperson and there are only AT available in the country. There are no MT which I think is a bit of a fail.

they claim that its due to extensive demand, but then why dont I see them on the road? :erm: the feeling that I got was that they were talking BS about the "demand". Oh... and the waiting list is 5-8 months for a MT.

Not quite sure what you mean by "done up" when referring to the KIA Koup? The Koup is by nature a "done up" Cerrato.

Test drove one a few weeks ago. Didn't really get a good idea of it's handling and performance characteristics as I only got to drive it down one road with a heck of a lot of speed bumps. The boot space was ample (for my considered needs) and the seating room in the back seats was also fine (well, for me when I did sit in the back. I'm not the tallest guy around, about 5'10-5'11" but had plenty of legroom even with the front seat pushed well back).

What I did like was the look of it, the quality of the interior (true, being Korean it might fall apart after a month, but with the former head of Audi's design department at the wheel now, lets hope that perceived lack of quality that has previously blighted Korean vehicles is a thing of the past) and the specced out nature of the 'standard' model. At R232,000 for a brand new automatic, it is surely the bargain of the century.

If you can live with the possible inconvenience of trying to shepherd a potentially drunk mate into the back by flipping the front seat forward, then the Kia Koup is a definite option.

edit : I think owning a coupe as a primary car when you have a family is a bit retarded. Its simply not practical at all. I have always heard this from my father, and to be quite honest I agree with him. Trying getting a kid in and out of a car seat in a coupe. It bad enough in a 5 door :p

I think it also comes down to how much of a taxi service you are. I one friend that is constantly driving around with people in the back. thats what he does... lift and carry all the time. Me on the other, I dont like doing that at all. here and there is fine, but my Polo that Im selling now is a 2006 model and the seats are still firm like they have never been used. Probably coz they havent been!!! ok there was that one time ;)

Personally, Im looking forward to driving my coupe while I can. Coz when you get married, and have some kiddies, it just doesnt work anymore.
