I'm replacing a stolen laptop and need to decide if upgrading from a Core 2 Duo P7570(2.26GHz,1066MHz,3MB) to a Core 2 Duo P8600 (2.4GHz, 1066MHz FSB,3MB L2 cache) is worth R500.

It will be used for some mid level gaming and heavy business use.

Thanks.

Not particularly...

For gaming, the GPU will make the most difference.

Yes definitely. Don't forget that you can't upgrade it later. The processor will also help with other tasks not just gaming. Spend the cash. Worth it.

I am not so sure the extra 170mhz is really worth 500 bucks. Spend it elsewhere, cannot see how such a small difference in speed is worth 500 but anyhow.

Thanks for the replies all, everything else is maxed out on the system (as much as Dell allows). I tend to lean towards Qwikslver's opinion, think I might be glad I spend the extra R500 in a years time.
Is the difference only in clock speed or are there other upgrades on the 8600?
I also share the 170mhz question with killadoob, it does seem like a very small increase.

Think the P8600 uses less power...and is slightly faster clock for clock...worth 500?
No, besides maybe 10min less battery time, you won't see any diff

In the old days, going from a Pentium 100 to a Pentium 166 was big deal. You could see a huge increase in performance. Nowadays it make no sense at all to get a CPU with a higher clockspeed in the same range. All things being equal, you will never see a performance difference between 2.26 and 2.4....

Thanks for the inputs, now I just have to convince my inner geek to rather spend the R500 on Blu-Ray disks :-P

Get more memory if possible or a better graphics option. or spend the R500 on a larger HDD.

Edit: Didn't see the maxed out part. Get the external HDD then.
