Hi all,

I've been a serial lurker of this forum for years, especially this last month or so since I decided to get my own solar installation done. Reason for posting this, well two reasons: @Snyper564 installation thread, and the Monthly Solar Production - Show us yours thread. I have read both from the first post up until today's.

I have been on and off going Solar for the past 6 months now, and every time I would find a reason not to do it, i.e. finances, prices are too expensive I'll wait for them to come down, not worth it, I can suffer through it, blah blah blah...what pushed me over the edge was being at my parents holiday place in Mosselbay over Easter, and for the first time in 6-8 months, not having load-shedding for a week. It's funny, the things I'd tough I'd enjoy most about not having load shedding were not what I expected (wifi, TV - both of which there is none at their place), but it was just having that one extra thing to think about removed for one week, not feeling like another thing out of my control and dictating my day - it was incredible. And to think, not long ago that was the norm.

Anyways, back to the purpose of this post. I pulled the trigger last week Tuesday and will be having my system installed this coming Thursday and Friday. After getting 6 quotes and one DIY option, I selected my installer, a local company who I have done work with previously, and who has done installations for people I know.

My system:
8kw Sunsynk inverter
2 x Hubble AM-5 5.12kWh batteries
14 x Canadian Solar 550W HiKu Mono Perc panels

Our Household:
Family of 6, me, my wife, 3 boys aged 8, 7, 4, and a girl turning 2 in August.
4 Bedroom house, lovely north-facing roofs. Being in Paarl, the sun rises over the Hawequas mountains and sets behind Paarl mountain, in winter I lose about an hour or so's worth of sunlight in the PM.
My wife works from home, the boys are in school, and return home between 14H00 and 15H00 most days.
We have a domestic in 5 days a week.
Gas hob, electric oven, 2 x 150L 3kW geysers, 3 x Aircons, pool pump, fridge freezer, chest freezer and drink fridge. All lights are low-watt LEDs. Will put everything on the Essential side and (hopefully) with some management we'll make it work.
Avg consumption per month for past 18 months is 822 units, but for the last 5-6 months it is closer to 700 units.

I will also be installing CBI Astutes on the 2 x geysers and pool pump, integrating it with Solar Assitant and Home Assistant once I receive my Rasberry Pi.

Will be updating the thread as we proceed. Today I had a team come and verti-cut 7 trees around my property, sad to have cut them, but will hugely assist with winter production and some extra sunshine on the house should assist with winter heating. Will add some photos tomorrow.

Hoping to learn a lot from this forum and to finally be an active, contributing member:)

Cheers

Glad all the effort I put into that thread helped others.

Also welcome to the club!

Well done for keeping on trying...and eventually having a girl !!

As promised, see pics below: sad to see the trees get chopped down, but all in the hope/promise of more sunlight on the panels. Will make sure to train them to fill up a bit more instead of just going straight up. The trim should give me an extra hour and a half to two hours extra on winter mornings on my 1 string of 6 panels. The others I trimmed will ensure my second string of 8 panels gets full sunshine as long as the sun is up. Hopefully, the big palm tree does not cause too much harm when the sun is at its lowest in winter...

Thanks for your update.

Unfortunate :( but all thanks to the government. It will be nice to get some feedback from you about the efficiency in times of summer, winter, partial cloud cover and complete cloud cover eg when about to rain etc. :)

Also, my Sunsynk arrived this AM - my installer only had a batch coming in the end of May, I managed to track one down in Bloem!Screenshot 2023-05-02 at 15.51.56.png

Jip, all thanks to our beloved government!

Will make sure to post, I don't have extremely high hopes for the next 2-3 months here in Paarl in terms of production, but lets see!

Thanks, you might or might not have had something to do with it;)

Two reasons, I move it over the pool every evening after the kids have burnt some energy in order to 1. Be able to irrigate lawn in the mornings without having a giant trampoline blocking my sprayers, and 2. To allow my lawn to receive some more sunshine without the shade of the trampoline. My kids pull it back onto the lawn everyday when they get home from school.

A side note for people with young kids, get a trampoline!!! Best R4K I have ever spent - keeps them busy for hours.

Rather install Geyserwise units than the Astute relays. With Geyserwise you can control water temperature and save more energy.

Enjoy, here there are lots of people who will share their journey. I have similar to yours minus 2 solar panels and switched off Eskom. Happiness.

Update:
Installers had a rocky start yesterday, hit N1 traffic on their way to Paarl, got to my place 2 hours late, then forgot cables at the workshop and were given the wrong hangers for my roof...I was quoted on 14 x 550W Canadian Solars, but they arrived with 14 x 500W JA Solars, apparently a stock mix up by their supplier. They will provide me with an additional 1 x panel for the difference in cost.

However, things have gotten better since then. Panels are going up as we speak (15th pannel will only be installed later), batteries and inverter are fixed to the wall, and wiring is about 70% done. If there are no more hiccups, they should be done by COB today.

Cannot wait.

Update:

Inverter, batteries and 10 of the 15 panels have were installed on Friday and are live. Balance to be installed on Wednesday (I am out of town Monday and Tuesday).

First day of solar was (disappointingly) a very cloudy day here in Paarl, however, managed to use zero Eskom from 07:00 up until about 19:30 when batteries fell below 80% while making dinner.

Some stats:
10kw produced via PV
Peaked at over 3.5kw for a few minutes

All in all, super happy with first day, no load shedding. Especially as we are back to stage 5 since this afternoon.

Will post better pics at a later stage, but here are some. The drywalls and ceiling were done today to help control dust, temp, etc. in garage.

Good day - any further updates on how the system is performing and lessons learned? I am around the corner in Somerset West and have also been going back and forth on when/if to pull the trigger on doing the install.
