Padayachie promotes DoC's broadband commitment

I was thinking. The cell companies have towers and fibre everywhere. Why not charge consumers a fee to run a couple fibre strands from their house to the nearest tower?

I spent sometime trying to help out a disadvantaged school that shall not be named in KZN and every computer there was infected to hell with viruses and porn. I told them they need to implement something but the headmaster says teachers come in and use the net for porn.

I no longer care for such things as they will be useless in just a few months. So unless someone with the know how is hired to maintain these labs its a waste of time.

Maybe I'm being naive and stupid, but why exactly do we need internet at the schools? I know it sounds weird, but I don't really see the point. When I was in school (which wasn't that long ago) I don't remember needing the internet. And finally, the internet does affect productivity a lot -- hell I'm sitting here on MyBB right now instead of working -- and I don't think our education system can take much more shots on the productivity scene.

I ended up removing admin rights and installing K9 software to block porn etc. Seemed to solve the problem.

A good start would be if the school internet was set up to only allow access to educational sites like
http://www.khanacademy.org/
and there are many more that I feel would make a massive difference in schools if used effectively.

Roy Padayachie highlights DoC’s commitment to bring affordable and quality broadband services to all South Africans

ROY, he who can, does; he who cannot, joins the ANC.

If he was serious he would have already gotten rid of ICASA that joke of a regulator and appointed someone with real teeth to do the regulating.

One of the oldest physco methodologies - he who repeats himself enough would start believing his own lies.

Learning systems are very much different to what they were 10 or even just 5 years ago. All subjects now, even on upper primary school level require lots of independent research work. Assignments are expected to cover diverse sub-sections within topics, and to include embedded images in tasks. The required level of "up-to-dateness" of content within assignments is also much higher than a decade ago, as changes within the various knowledge areas take place at a much faster rate.

Most learners from previously disadvantaged communities still do not have access to internet at home.

Teachers need internet to meet the requirements of all learning areas to include current affairs and latest developments. Prescribed syllabuses change way faster than textbook publishers can keep up with. Teachers often have to turn to the Internet for creative, current and multimedia content. Teachers also need access to email for obvious reasons.

Back in the days there was no Internet, and our learning systems were structured such that we don't use the net. But can any of you guys imagine not having access? How many times in the past year have you used the Internet to easily acquire information or whatever (licit) content? Well, just over a decade ago, we did not readily have access to this, yet we survived. Does this mean that we can easily revert to those days and cancel out ADSL lines? Just as we have moved with the times, so have the education systems.

School learners and staff do need Internet access.
