Padayachie promotes DoC's broadband commitment

Bitter sweet IMHO. Schools do need computers to teach scholars how to survive in a modern world (internet less so) but doesn't the minister have a self imposed deadline for LLU in the next few months that if properly implemented and managed would surely increase broadband penetration exponentially?

If you can on saying it, eventually people will start believing you... hmm... well that's what he must think. :)

I spent sometime trying to help out a disadvantaged school that shall not be named in KZN and every computer there was infected to hell with viruses and porn. I told them they need to implement something but the headmaster says teachers come in and use the net for porn.

I no longer care for such things as they will be useless in just a few months. So unless someone with the know how is hired to maintain these labs its a waste of time.
IMHO Linux is the way to go.

Roy's definition of universal broadband is that everyone must have access to 384kbps ADSL by 2019.

FAIL!!!!!
That is why I find the picture so telling. A water pipe and out of it comes paper tape with 0 and 1's. Brings up an image of the old telegraph machines still using morse code.

Roy, sort out Telkoms prices and that will go a long way in bringing internet to the people

I have always wondered how they plan for so many years ahead but with the technology that is available today... Do they not understand that technology is changing so fast, that what is in use today will be outdated by tomorrow?

Learning systems are very much different to what they were 10 or even just 5 years ago. All subjects now, even on upper primary school level require lots of independent research work. Assignments are expected to cover diverse sub-sections within topics, and to include embedded images in tasks. The required level of "up-to-dateness" of content within assignments is also much higher than a decade ago, as changes within the various knowledge areas take place at a much faster rate.
...
School learners and staff do need Internet access.

You make a good point, but I just can't help but feel like we're focusing on the nice-to-have's before fixing the existing problems. But let's not turn this into a discussion about why the education system is failing. Like I said, it was a bit of a rant. ;)

If I had R10 for every time I've heard a politician play a remix of this story...

Blah, Blah ................. This si the typical story spinning by the present government.

Talk is cheap... that that is why the just keep talking. Heard the Teacher Laptop project is also not going anyware. What a pity...

By 2014 I promise that every person will have affordable access to a kettle. Vote for ME!!!
