Page-turn animation patented by Apple

Yeah that was last week already (15th).... the week in which they were awarded 38 patents.
On the 16th, they proceeded to sue a library for violation of patent law. :D

No seriously wtf. I made a program in grade 12 (4 years ago) that had the page-turn animation, so now am I suddenly liable... Patent system is a complete joke, honestly.

Yeah you have blatantly copied Apples "world creation" patent too by simply being alive,seriously the patents being granted are ridiculous.

Whats so innovative about glass stairs or turning a page?:wtf:

Anybody still defending patents after this needs serious psychological help.
There are a few valid patents but by and large most are a farce due to the system being broken.

Well software Patents I will agree with you, they suck big time, that is why our and many other governments do not enforce or acknowledge them.
Design patents (When done right) and Hardware patents have a reason and work.

Software patents in my mind would be the same as patenting novels, music or math. < they should fall under copyright only.
Hardware patents is a must. They where created in order so that people are encouraged to share idea's without the fear of losing income in doing so. Think of a mill that find a cheap way to grind. Takes out a patent with a limited time where it can make a profit and after said time the knowledge can be used by everyone.
Design Patents is so that someone does not try and fool you into thinking that its something that its not. Think fakes. In this case I do not think seeing a fake page turn will make me think I am using an Apple device so on its own I would say it should not exist, but if someone release an fake iBook application on Google play saying its from Apples with same page turn look, then Apple has my blessing to go after them like a bat out of hell.

Yep software is the main culprit,there are many other areas besides what you mentioned above where patents are essential,take the poster child for patents i.e the pharmaceutical industry for example where there is a clear need for patents.

Does yours use the exact same angle depicted in the patent? Otherwise, there isn't a problem.
Just FYI, Amazon, Barn's & Noble et all don't use this technique.

Why Apple keep insisting on this skeuomorphism I don't know

I agree broadly (But not completely. There is a need for software patents, as long as they are specific).
Design patents are fine too. The Coke Bottle, the iPad/iPhone, Google Homepage, etc. All have design patents and they should be protectable. Apple's implementation of page turning should be fine as well

Dude, once again, not every innovate patent needs to be world changing. Some are much more innovative than others. Some are invention, some are minor innovation. It should all be protected.

People should be outraged at the stupid animation itself. It provides very little to the user, other than looking impressive

Nothing at all. It just has a certain look and feel that Apple doesn't want people infringing upon. It's a far cry from them trying to own the page turn.

Yeah it looks pretty impressive when I turn the page of my book at that exact angle.Guess what, I like technology to be as natural as possible,anything hindering that claiming to be innovation is rubbish IMO.

Adobe has page turning patents and so does Microsoft. I'd be surprised if Barnes and Nobles and Amazon also don't have page turning patents. It's trade dress. A very specific, narrow way of creating a page turn animation.

Oh that is not something new. Patent Office do not check if patents have been issues before. That is the courts job, Or do you think they look through the 6+ million patents before said one to see if it exist or not.

I'm growing weary of this whole 'patent system is broken' rhetoric. How do you know that it's broken? Are you a patent lawyer? Could you articulate why exactly design patents need revision, in which areas it's being exploited? Should intellectual property not be protected? Anybody can say a system is broken without the slightest amount of expertise in the nuances of that system.

Nope. Well not here though.
Patents are only valid in the country of registration, in this case America. They can't sue Samsung in for selling a device in Europe if they use the animation feature, only if they do so in America. You can however apply for that patent in other countries too (as they usually do).

What are you talking about? Microsoft, Adobe and Amazon's patents on page turning is exactly what caused Apple to come up with their own.
Patents most often create innovation
