Other than jumping on the racist bandwagon, what has he done for education lately, or anything at all? Only heard his name twice this year, once with the creche cupcake saga, that left Lesufle with egg on his face, and now with the hair saga, where he stated that the teachers at the school are not fit to teach (ENCA interview). He appointed a committee for the cupcake saga, but I have not heard the outcome of that??? Now he has appointed a committee for the hair saga.

Apart from peacocking on Twitter and at the schools, what other good things has he done?
 
Him and Debbie Schafer are considered the two best heads of provincial education. They work quite closely together as well. (Minister Schafer is a bit better in my opinion)
And this can be seen in both their provinces matric results

He oversaw the whole tablet debacle in Gauteng as well...... so colour me unimpressed. I would think the matric results don't actually have much to do with him.

Yeah - he is trying to implement a totally paperless environment in our pubic schools. There was a selection of I think around 5 schools with 5 contractors who were supposed to POC the whole thing. It was not put out to tender. Instead, the DoE used a closed bidding process where vendors were pulled off the vendor database. If we had to take a closer look, we will find massive irregular spending.

The PoCs had to include:

  • Tablets - 50iirc;
  • Learner portal with digital content management system including content (text books, videos and interactive content). This content had to be available offline too;
  • Leaner management system; and
  • Unlimited connectivity across the school (just admin and classrooms areas) - this meant the school had to be kitted up with WiFi. Children with smart devices were to be provided with access to this WiFi network as well, so the concurrent users are going to be astronomical (that means more or bigger access points, which cost a lot of money). Fully kitting up a school (back then) cost between R200k to R300k. The cabling and equipment needed was insane.

On top of that, the Department still had to insure the tablets out of its own insurance and install security measures on them. I believe they were also looking at charging and docking trolleys for the tablets.

A project like that will gobble up an entire Department's budget and will be an absolute nightmare to manage.

Lesufi is a joke. He is latching onto the latest trend and tying build his legacy and name from there. He is just another useless politician trying to score brownie points. We need more people with vision, but he seems to select the vision based on his political aspirations.
 
Wouldn't it be better to actually build new schools where no school has been built in 22 years? They cleared the land in Radiokop for a new school in 2014, it's getting all overgrown again. They cleared the land for a new school in Northriding in 2013, you'd not think they did though as guess what it's back to what it looked like.

Hat's off the Debbie Schafer who is not in favour of promoting children with bad marks to the next standard.

She mentioned children who write their name and the date on an exam paper and sit looking at the teacher. They know they cannot be held back.

TBH that looks like something set to fail.

People need to be realistic, having a completely paperless classroom in a rural/township school is not the most practical of considerations.

And this is the guy who uses an in-house IT team & server to manage the sort of load that comes with tens of thousands of parents trying to access it at once.

How is that not impractical? All you need is the infrastructure, electricity, the security around the premises.
 
Panyaza Lesufi has contrubuted absolutely nothing toward education in South Africa. He is a natural born racist and his policies, right form the outset was to close down or totally reform Afrikaans or white majority schools. He has not built a single school for the previously disadvantages in their areas and appointed competent teachers to teach them in their mother tongue. In fact, he has caught himself up in an endless circle where he keeps trying taking over existing infrastructure and working it into the ground, just to identify the next.

He makes his name, much like the rest of the ANC by playing on emotions and using racism cards left, right and center. But, this is how things work in South Africa of late.

As Albert said, something SA doesn't have, particularly in townships.

In addition, how is a township kid who has a high probability of living in a house without electricity supposed to do his/her homework with a tablet which will inevitably run out of battery or get lost, stolen etc.

KISS is the name of the game. Do the basics first and use technology where it is feasible and adds value, rather than making things more difficult.

I have read the thread. But between me and you, we know that the reason Mr Lesufi is under discussion is because he dared to open his mouth about the injustice that is going on at that high school.

Try again, he is under discussion because he is useless. The apparent "injustice" at that high school was just the catalyst that brought his incompetence to the fore again.
