Parallels on External HDD

For those interested:
running the Parallels VM files off an external HDD works very well. I am still having a bit of speed issues, especially after the MBP goes into semi-sleep mode: It takes a while for the VM to get to grips with things.
However, I don't doubt for one second that this will be sorted by using a FW400/800 chassis for the external drive.
So, for now (until the company policy is in full swing), I won't need the VM, but will definitely upgrade to the FW800 setup with an additional 1Gb RAM.
Oh, I settled on a 60Gb MAC OS partition and 40Gb FAT32 partition on the external drive.

Was strolling through Makro today when I came across a 500gb Seagate External Hdd - FW400 and USB2.
Decided what the hell and stuck it on the card. I think work will pick up the tab - backups and all that

I've been seeing quite a few of those (and considering it). Problem is that I am looking for the 2.5" enclosures (Bus powered and all that jazz), and I just don't have the energy (or packing space) to carry another transformer around
I wish my company will pick up the tab for my 1Gb Stick

I bet you feel like installing parallels and running the vm file from the external drive
Would love to know what the Firewire 400 speed is like ...
If I was going to keep parallels after the demo then I would probably try it but as things stand I'll be deleting it.I bet you feel like installing parallels and running the vm file from the external drive
EDIT - tried it using symlink (ln -s) and it didnt seem to take much of a performance hit but I only started it up and did a few little things.

How about comparing it with the fw400 while you're at it. The chassis should be backwards compatible right?

I thought of that as well. Yeah, USB1.1/2, FW400 and FW800 - Auto select depending on the port. BTW, do you guys know which port (the 4-pin or 6-pin) is the FW800 port?
One would obviously want to see the type of data transfer speeds on the different protocols. Is there a nice proggie that will write/read say 50MB of data, and record the speed?
FW800 is 9 pin, FW400 powered is 6 and unpowered is 4.

1. 6-pin to 6-pin cable
2. 6-pin to 4-pin converter
3. USB A to USB B cable
4. USB power cable (assuming this comes in handy if you only have a 4-pin port on the machine)

Yep. Its like buying a printer lately and they don't include the cable. idiots!
