Parkhurst ADSL problems

Short explanation of the problem
My line went down on Friday, 10 August (Women's Day) and I had no service, despite SMSing to 0123210212 the line remained down until Monday morning. I received several "your-call-is-important-to-us" updates but no service.
As a residential user, I prefer it when I have internet when I am at home, i.e. on a long weekend.

PARKHURST - ADSL Issues
Just some information that I have gleaned from the Telkom technicians:

1. I am on a copper feed from the Rosebank exchange. Apparently about 6km of copper.
2. The 1000 pair cable from Rosebank to our local connection boxes is old and paper insulated and as such often gives poor performance after rain.
3. The technicians all say that the plan to implement mini DSLAMs fed by fibre in Parkhurst is long overdue. No one seems to know anything about future plans for giving us a better service in Parkhurst.

ADSL speed
1 Mbps connection
1 Mbps uncapped internet

Imaginet (I can recommend them) They now look after both the ADSL service as well as the provision of internet.
They are able to reset the port on the DSLAM in Rosebank exchange themselves without the normal lengthy "on hold" from Telkom.

Attenuation:
Attenuation is 59.5 dB (should be less than 55 dB
I am told that this is poor owing to the distance to our exchange.

Other Problems:
The internet connection often drops completely and I have to manually reboot the modem or even get my ISP to reset the port. This can happen a few times a day or be trouble free for weeks on end.
Best times for downloading seems to be 24:00 - 06:00 This is when I schedule downloads.

I've had issues in Parkhurst for years now, I live below 6th avenue and can get max 2mbps stable.

All techs i spoke to said the exchange needs an upgrade and they hate working on it.

I wanted to start a petition a while back to get telkom to upgrade the exchange.

Any updates on this? How do we get them to replace this paper wrapped cable? there must be a ton of people baying for better internet in this area...

Also in Parkhurst below 4th and stuck on a 1mbps max. Use to be able to connect to 2mbps but not anymore. I have a feeling Telkom took my previous relatively "good" circuit and gave it to someone else as this happened after my line went down and got restored after a fault was logged.

Summer months are particularly bad with noise on the line and the line going down. Have new wiring from the pole into the house so nowhere for moisture or water to get in on my side.

Not sure if telkomza could answer when and if they are going to look into upgrade or to some remedial work in the area.

This is after our problems with a stolen cable and the TELKOM upgrade of our 1Mb line to 2Mb

I can now sync at 4mb since late December. 011447####

Hi,

My number is 011447 and Afrihost is telling me my max speed I can get is 2mbps - but I spoke to Telkom and they said the exchange handles up to 10mbps after last years upgrades and I must contact AH as they are my ISP with which my line is WS to.

I'm pretty sure if you can get up to 4, I can too???

Who's your ISP and is your line with Telkom?

I just want someone to help me get faster speed and AH seems reluctant and Telkom can't help due to WS.

2mbps is killing me (although I only get around 1,4 average)

Thanks!!

Telkom tends not to take in account the distance from the exchange when they advise people of the maximum speed and only tell you what the dslam at the exchange is capable of. Afrihost most probably look at the line stats and tell you realistically what kind of speed you can expect. I am also in Parkhurst and having had numerous Telkom technicians around finding better circuits replacing cables to the house etc. I have made peace that 2meg will be the best I will ever get in Parkhurst with line attenuation of about 57.5 and snr of between 6 and 8. That will be until they install a MSAN in the area of which there is talk but no sign of yet.

Hey guys,

just thought I'll let you know that eventually got my line upgraded.

Guy at AH that was great help; sorted with some Telkom guys to do a manual intervention and I got my line upgraded to 4mbps, even tough all the software tools still says that I can only get 2mbps (Telkom & Ah).

I knew there was a way & just because "computer says noo", doesn't mean it's true!

I see that on buckingham avenue they have put up two DLSAMs which are connected to the Rosebank Exchange via Fiber.
The Tech (Baas) said that it has been cut over.

I proceeded to ask him if my house which is 400m from the DSLAM will be able to get 10Mb and he said most likley not since I am the last house on the street that connects to the SDC Q10 on 4th and Ruthland (i think). Very Frustrating, previously the owner had a 1Mb line, just like you guys were describing

I have now moved into the place and ordered a 10Mb line from them and the technician has said he has the cable team working on the connection as it was not working during the install even before the tech came to my place.

I am now currently waiting for something to happen.

PARKHURST ADSL Issues

Well! It looks like we may be seeing the start of an improved service from Telkom. Hopefully we will have a few miniDSLAMs implemented in Parkhurst as well.

I have, in the past week, moved from Imaginet to Afrihost as my ADSL service provider. Although the speed and response is similar (to be expected) the overall quality of service is better in that they have much better metrics and control mechanisms. One is able to reset the ADSL port via the internet etc.

I have also found out that my maximum throughput, at the moment is only 2Mbps. To be expected if one is at the end of about 6kms of copper.

I hope that Seblat5ch gets sorted out with his fast 10Mbps connection. I look forward to further postings.

Thought I'll post this.

After numerous attempts to get my line upgraded, everyone said I can't, due to what the software says. But after a whole debacle I got my way and had Telkom manually intervene. :-)

Good luck and hope you get your 10mbps!!!

Hi guys

Very interesting forum. I moved to 6th street at the beginning of Feb. I have a 4mb uncapped line with Afrihost (Afrihost advised that this speed should run fine). Generally, the line speed is great (downloads > 350kbps), however the internet drops from time to time (Light on the router turns red). Sometimes this happens every hour, other times every second day or so. When I reset my router the internet works again.

I initially thought this was an issue with the router (Trendnet TEW-658BRM) but I've updated the firmware and contacted Trendnet and the problem remains. I also thought that the router could be overloaded with too many devices (6 smartphones, 4 laptops, 3 tablets, 2 ATV's) but could the actual problem be with the Telkom line? I will run diagnostics on the line tonight and get the snr and attenuation stats.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Chris

I get this same problem(different area), have no idea what causes it at all... Line and data with afrihost and they've escalated to Telkom but still haven't heard anything further after a week.

It's incredibly frustrating because the problem is so intermittent that everyone keeps saying the line is fine and trying to catch a techie at the exact moment it dies is incredibly difficult.

Ya it's very irritating. Will let you know if I find a solution - please post here if you do too!!

In the router's setup page check the snr (signal-to-noise-ratio). If it is around 6db it might disconnect from time to time as there is a lot of noise on the line which makes it more difficult for the modem to stay connected and it will disconnect from time to time when conditions change or there is interference on the line. Lowering the speed of the line will increase the snr and result in a more stable connection will less disconnects.
