Hoping someone with knowledge of Pastel can help here...

I have a client running Pastel Partner 18 on her machine. There are some obvious limitations with respect to backups, portability, etc. with Pastel which still have 1990s-era underpinnings. I believe there's a cloud version of Pastel, and she'd like to move to that. Does anyone know what's involved, in terms of what version to get, how to import data, licensing, and and limitations of the cloud version?

Sage One, the cloud version, has many limitations.
Limited historic transactions can be uploaded.
You pay for every extra company database.
Inventory functionality is basic to useless.

So, it all depends what your client's current transactional culture, whether SageOne will be fit.

Best option is to contact Sage directly but they will also tell her what she wants to hear.

Please be careful when making comparisons, there are numerous Sage 50 and Sage Accounting (formerly Sage One) versions. Pastel Partner is part of the Sage 50 franchise. I believe the above link refers to the UK versions.

Here is information from the Sage South Africa Website. It's called Sage Accounting:

There is also a conversion process available:

You can sign up for a 30-Day trial and try it out before you subscribe.

Could you elaborate on what the client does and what industry she operates in. Will she be using the forex and/or inventory function? Perhaps also what type of bookkeeping she does in terms of printing out hard copies of invoices etc. I know that SageOne has the cool function where you can upload invoices and link it to transactions.

It's for home use. She's an accountant, and she manages personal and family trusts and accounts, body corporate accounts, etc. I think she has about 5-10 "companies" in Pastel.
