So I am having the same problem as this on a clients laptop: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/208199-Pastel-SQL-error

"an error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)"

Problem is the OP in that thread failed to post what he did to fix the problem, I have tried google but thus far no success.

Help?

Go and check in Management Studio on the server, log in with the Admin user, right click on the Server name in the Object Explorer and go to Properties. Go to Connections and select "Allow Remote Connections to this Server".

See if this helps.

Check if SQL Server browser is running in SQL Server and also check if your windows firewall has an exception for the SQL Server port. Let me know how that goes..

Not sure what that is? :( Isn't it just a setting on the laptop in the SQL server configuration manager? this laptop has SQL 2005.

If this is a Pastel product, I assume it is Pastel Evolution or Pastel Evolution Payroll as this is the only Pastel Products running on SQL. Management Studio is the SQL Server Management Suit. If this is a local installation, there shouldn't be any SQL configuration required, it should work with all the default settings.

Make sure that the user logging on to windows has full Admin rights.

In SQL Configuration Manager, you can also check that TCP/IP and Named Pipes are enabled under SQL Server Network Configuration > Protocols for MSSQLServer

If this doesn't sort it maybe give Pastel a shout so that they can troubleshoot it with you over the phone.

Not sure where to find SQL server browser, I made a UDP port exception for 1432 in the firewall.

Product is Pastel Invoicing

It's a company laptop so I assume it connects to a server.

There is no MSSQLServer only a PASINVOICE.

TCP/IP and Pipes are running. User is a admin on the laptop.

Can't give Pastel a shout cause they want R632 for it.

If you're connecting from a laptop then the problem is on the server that is hosting SQL Server. The following must checked and done on the server that is hosting SQL Server:

- SQL Server Browser running?
- TCP exception port i.e 1432?
- Remote connection enabled?
- SQL Server service running?

All the above can be checked on the server that is hosting SQL Server. I assume you don't know where the server is ? And no DBA?

No I don't I just want the program to work on the laptop, the documents are on the laptop, so not sure now what to tell the client. Is there a way to just switch off the connecting to a server part and work in a sort of offline mode?

1. Default SQL port is 1433 not 1432
2. Test the connection to SQL by setting up a ODBC connection on the machine, troubleshoot from there.
2.1 ODBC connection is in Admin Tools.
2.2 Follows the prompts to connect to the SQL Server
3. SQL 2005 requires that the user be provisioned as a SysAdmin user on SQL otherwise you can't just connect, being a local admin is not good enough anymore.

Changed still have the same problem.

Not sure how to do that.

Think I'll just have to tell the client that I can't sort it out for them and that they must pay the R632 to have it fixed via support.
