Pay more for electricity

I don't see how this will help. Eskom has a electricity shortage, yet they hike prices?

I'm guessing that Eskom wants the poor to cut their electricity so that those who can afford it reap the benefit. Even Mbeki seems to think that way if I read his comments...

You need to think like a [-]criminal[/-] ANC politician.

Higher prices will mean a slight decrease in use.
So, less outages, and much much more revenue.
This will lead to them being able to say "look! it worked! Not so many load sheddings now".
Result? Lots of lovely moola for bigger bonuses due to "solving the problem".

The increase will add much needed cash to the expansion project.

As for the poor, they can just increase the monthly free electricity they get.

IMO, the days of cheap electricity are gone, and the economy will adjust in as far as costs is concerened. Sadly, salaries are usually the last to be adjusted upwards.:(

And the poor will get food subsidies too?
And will we stop exporting power at 11c a KWH to our neighbours?

The contracts were signed THIS year! you dont sign a long term contract without 'fixing the price'

Eskom spites the Government and vice versa.

At the end of the day the man in the street will always foot the bill. I'm getting weary of a bunch of high-profile people talking and those who voted them there, paying.

when was the last time eskom put their pricing up?

is 18% really that much? an extra 20 or 30 bucks a month

if it means they will build a power station then bring it on

its all supply and demand if you increase prices demand should drop. There was an article posted my rpm that had the same story. I see nothing wrong with it.

Like i said in another thread:

The rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer
Awesome, you come up with that cliche all by yourself? Electricity increases hits the rich much harder than the poor. The poor mostly use electricity for lighting, while the rest use electricity for just about everything.

Every year

18% adds to inflation so everything goes up - ultimately a bit more than R20 to R30. And if you didn't have that spare R20 in the first place?

It will also play a compounding role in future increases.

YOU only pay R20 or R30. Its nothing, but what about Pick n Pay? who have to run fridges 24x7 .. What about shopping centres, who have to increase the rent 'cos of increased operating costs.

you WILL pay for that too in costs of food! You will pay for that percentage MANY times over on everything you buy. Think further than yourself :D and you will see the repercussions are huge.

Edit: Eskom puts the price up EVERY year by the percentage of Inflation!

I have no idea.
I do know that *I* have paid more for electricity every year. I dug out an old bill, looks like 4-5% last time around.
If Eskom and guavamint are too thick to ensure they get an increase when City Power bumped up the retail price, why is it my fault?
And what happened to all that extra money?

There i will disagree:

how many times a week does a wealthy person go to a restaurant, he doen't use electricity to kook

Where the lower income person uses a lot more to kook each day for the household.

as someone said supply and demand

look at oil, now that china is booming and using up so much oil its just gone through the roof

also if eskom puts it up every year whats the problem?
is it normally only 5% or something, not as high at 18%?

umm how can the increase hit the rich person more roflmao, well off ppl dont feel 18% come on now

the poor and middle class suffer the most
especially ppl who barely make it through the month

I wish it was an extra 20 or 30 bucks, in fact its an extra R80 at home and another R2700 for my business p.m

ok fine the money is going towards new power stations, but what about after the new stations are done?, will the price come down?, will it take 18% of eskoms total income to keep an extra power station running?, i dont think so.

no im just saying for the man in street its not a whole lot more but it will become because prices will rise no doubt about that

would u rather pay an extra 18% if they can get another station going and stop the blackouts or would u rather they keep loading shedding?

i dunno hey im sure places like anglo lonmin all the massive mine companies would pay the extra and ensure that power is stable

even though the mining industry has lost alot of money with the pricing for precious metal they can make that back plus much more in no time as long as eskom keep them up and running

as for the rest us we must suffer :(

horrible situation we in but one we must do our best to get out off

o you never see companies droping prices, ok electronic companies do but other than that once a price goes up it stays up

It is not R20 or R30.

My bill is R500 a month. So 14% on that is, errm, err, R75?

But - the increase is going to be more than 14% - how much more? no one seems to want to say.
And the 14% excludes the 4% "tax" Trevor "I did nothing wrong with the Arms Deal" Manuel added on.
