Since +-17 Oct I have been getting .07MBps - .34MBps on my PAID FOR Telkom ADSL!!

I am in Faerie Glen Ext 9 anyone else suffering?

I logged online - NO RESPONSE?
I phoned - got no further than the computer saying that the problem has been logged?
I logged on Hellopeter yesterday

I have the DoBroadband 4MBPS and 8gig (then I top-up through Afrihost)- Suggestions I used about 15gig p.m.

They probably going to bill me for the month as well.

One would think they would pep up with the competition out there!

call 0800375375 ask them to reset your port - you'll need to reboot modem too afterward.

Mbps, MBps. Learn the difference...

Have you tried another ISP account to debug if its the line itself, or just the ISP?

Speed is very relative, where do you get the speed from? Local or international server? Speedtest site or a torrent?

0.34MBps isn't too far off the maximum speed of a 4Mbps ADSL connection. I think the maximum is around 0.42MBps though.

Could you perhaps log in on your ADSL modem's web interface, go to the ADSL statistics page and then post your stats here. We're particularly interested in your SNR margins, line attenuation, sync speed and perhaps your ADSL mode (G.Dmt/ADSL2+) too.

Please tell us what ISP accounts you've tried.

Lastly, it would be helpful if you can go to www.speedtest.net & www.pingtest.net and post the results here too.

I've had similar issues here in Greenside. I started out on a 4mbps line but was only getting download speeds of 0,08mbps. Apparently we are too far from the exchange to expect anything higher. I'd find out about that as well.

I had similar problems and resetting the line didn't make a difference. I asked the Telkom tech that came out to move me to a different DSLAM port. I now have max speed on my line but for for reason my upstream syncs at 508kbps but I can live with that.

You lucky, you been moved to a newer DSLAM, ADSL2+ syncs usually do that to your upstream, but don't worry about that. Chances are you can be upgraded to 10meg if your SNR values are good enough.

Nhova, if your upstream syncs at like 507 or 508kbps, instead of 512kbps, then you can just change your ADSL mode (actually its modulation) from ADSL2+ to G.Dmt, and then it should sync at precisely 512kbps.

Telkom is known to be a bit slow on complaints.

You should get them to check if there is no problems with your Line.

Did you try using another ISP?

If you did, and you get the same speed, then that means there is either something wrong with your line or modem.

Well be getting ripped off with substandard service UNTIL Hellkom unbundles and allows more comp in

Nothing is stopping your "more comp" from installing their own DSLAMs, backhaul and local loops as they all have licences to do so. Why not ask them to do it?

this++
and have you checked any audible noise on your line, and
remember all telephonic devises must go thru a filter while the modem must not if you have check this then try unplugging everything then plug the modem back with out the telephones then check to see if there is an improvement

Thanks for the replies: (yip I'm a Noob......sorry!)
on a 4Mbps line
International
.07Mbps download
.33Mbps upload
ping 214ms

Local
.38Mbps download
.34Mbps upload
ping 41ms

Tried various ISP - same+-

Unplugged everything - tried
Reset router - tried
run through 2 different new filters - tried
run without phone - tried

Same nothing - can't even get into speedtest.net anymore - too slow
Cant get into speedtest.net on wifi through cell either - too slow

Was working gr8 with almost full 4Mbps up and till +-17 Oct?

Guess I'll have to wait for telkom - I'm 49 now maybe before I turn 60 something .....................

could be an exchange or dslam problem since my family in faerie glen experience problems sometimes on it.

well u gotta know that u will not get full speed ADSL apart from most nights and weekend, priority is given to businesses and ur internet is shaped, the more u download, the slower ur internet speed is gonna be during the week, its just how it works here, i dont think u can blame them, its more of a 'read the fine prints' situation i think, every isp works like that normally.

Hey thanks for the info. I will give it a try.

You appear to be suggesting that the various licence holders build entire networks duplicating the network already available, something which is not envisaged by the ECA and which is both idiotic and against the national interest - imagine how much crap there will be if the licence holders are all trying to run lines criss-crossing towns. This is why the ECA and legislation around the world like it have mandatory facilities leasing or open access provisions. It is the open access provision and a push for competition that has lead to LLU in many jurisdictions. Until fairly recently the Facilities Leasing Regulations did not exist but the "more comp" have for the most part been investing in backhaul leaving on your statement just DSLAMs and local loops:
Basic economics stops "more comp" from installing thier own DSLAMs because Telkom is holding out on co-locating DSLAM's and leasing the most basic and essential facility of a copper wire between an exchange and a customers premises. Again have the correct LLU framework and this happens. Have the wrong regulations and somebody gets to piggyback in the market.

However if the "more comp" where to go the route of pursuing rent seeking (hell if Telkom can why can't they) and milk the Facilities Leasing Regulations some of the very lucrative exchanges will become unbundled while the vast majority of the country gets left out. I suspect Telkom is hoping to have metro services fully on stream which the can price suitably to drive most of "more comp" out of this market by the time "more comp" gets Facilities Leasing enforced against Telkom. Of course the sooner ICASA puts its foot down and holds that the Facilities Leasing Regulations demand unbundling of the facilities making up the local loop and starts finer Telkom the greater the chance that Telkom will see that properly engaging on an LLU strategy and that provision of suitable bit-stream services nationwide and systematic building of facilitative internet facilities is the best option for its future survival. If Telkom manages to persist in ducking and diving well the digital divide will inevitably get larger.

Went on line this morning @ 7:20 and problem solved - back to 3.39Mbps.
Thanks for the advice and info.
