Paying so much for games

No, no, you're confused - the dev still gets a cut (albeit minuscule in value) compared to 2nd hand where the dev gets nothing

Can you explain what makes game developers so special that they deserve to be paid twice or more for a copy of a game?

I answered this a while back.

Hollywood has a whole life cycle to make money, cinema release, Pay VOD release, Blu-ray release, TV syndication among others.

There's nothing like that for games. Once a game is older than a month it's forgotten.

Can I ask something, why does steam allow you to share games to friends and family :? (FOR FREE)

While we are debating it

This is how I see it. Take not it doesn't always happen like this.

  1. AfricanTech buys a game super kunfu girl @ R800.00 he plays it for 3 months and he is done with it
  2. I buy the game from him for R300.00.
  3. He then adds that R300.00 to his piggy bank and puts it towards Diablo 4 so my money in directs goes to a dev
  4. I am happy I have a game. He is happy he can buy a new game.

Or he had to wait till he had the funds, and sit with a game that was rotting.

I would never be able to buy the game and bought drugs with the money instead .
:D

:( sorry I am worse then a pirate then ill never buy a steam game again because ill be able to share it with my friends

:D

On a more serious note, Steam has recognised that in order to grow the market, you have to make the product accessible - hell man, if I didn't pirate as a student, I wouldn't be buying software today (now that I can afford to buy). Funny thing 'ey, Microsoft, probably the company whose software has been the most pirated in history, is also hugely successful (students pirate MS Office, when they start working, what do they demand to use/buy when they are working/earning money, yep, the software they're familiar with and have built up knowledge of).

So by allowing friends and family to share, they increase the future market size 'cos when your kid is old enough to afford his own Steam habit, he will be signing up for sure.

It's called "innovative business practices" that recognise that the world has changed forever and best new models be implemented in order to remain relevant.

There are far too many industries desperately hanging on to the old models - they will go the way of the dinosaurs.

I've been a PC gamer for years now and I have no idea what you're talking about.

PC gaming vs. console gaming isn't even an argument when it comes to cost - PC games is significantly cheaper. I would know - my disposable income increased quite a bit when I sold my PS3 and upgraded my PC for gaming. Then you consider that PC games run at 1080p easily, have better graphics, better performance, a much larger selection of games etc. and it becomes a no-brainer.

It is a brainer because some of us don't own super fast Windows desktops.
Secondly the selection of PC games is limited with ports sucking, case in point Dead or Alive 5 on Steam vs PS4. Steam also charging a huge amount for DOA DLC compared to PSN with the DLC caring over from the PS3 version. And of course most console games do not get ported and so if you play that sort of a game - mostly Japanese games - PC is out of the question despite the recent appearance of several titles on Steam.

The graphics is not really a big issue. 1080p and even 720p is good enough.

Also, you only need to upgrade a gaming rig once in a blue moon.

Not if you're really about graphics.

I care about graphics, quite a lot. I wouldn't stand for not being able to play my games on max settings at my monitor's native resolution. Each of my components gets upgraded every 4-5 years. I stagger the purchases so that it's never a particular drain on my finances. A new motherboard and CPU is never more frequent than 5 years for me.

You can see my specs in my signature. That rig can play absolutely any game maxed out at 1080p with a healthy framerate, and many of the parts were bought secondhand on Carbonite. Most recently - the HD7990 with its waterblock for R4k. That's more powerful than a GTX 980 and will last me ages to come, and only cost me half that because of the sale of the outgoing card. PC gaming does not have to be expensive at all, especially if you buy from Carbonite.

If you go with a minimum amount that you'd spend on a non-gaming computer as R5000 (less than this & you're unlikely to be in the market for console gaming anyway) and add what you'd spend upfront on a console (R5500 console + R900 extra controller + R749 PSN = R7149), you get R12149. You can buy a really nice gaming PC on Carbonite with that money.

Bad PC ports are very infrequent. Dead or Alive 5 is one of the weakest fighting games out there. I'd rather play Ultra SF IV, Injustice or MK X thanks. The one franchise that really bummed me out on PC was FIFA, but PC is now the lead platform for it.

DLC carrying over from PS3 is irrelevant, as you still pay for it. That's a negative point anyway, as not many PS3 games or game content give you a PS4 equivalent for free. On PC you have no such issue.

So you have to stagger your purchases.... to enjoy graphics. So I was right.

Except now games are coming out in 4K with increasing frame rates. If you're one of these people who maintains PC graphics > PS4 graphics you have to spend good dollar to achieve that.

And you're buying second hand. Well one can buy a PS4 second hand too. Or even better import one. You're comparing second hand equipment with new equipment which is not nice of you.

Why buy PSN? And Why buy an extra controller? And surely your PC will need two controllers too eh?
(Do you include the free games on PSN if bought?)

Bad PC ports are infrequent despite some being fixed to PS4 fps? And does every PS4 game get ported?

I beg to disagree. DOA5 is one of the better fighting games. It requires a great deal of skill and practice to play at higher levels of difficulty. It's MK which is for n00bs and children. FFS "fatalities" which one can even "purchase". SF is below DOA5 level. I think you just haven't played good games and enjoy sh-tty Western FPS. Never mind the sh-tty retarded character design on SF and MK. MK is the weakest game there is.

Of course it's relevant. It's already paid for and you get to now run it on a new version of the game on a new console.

Also the carrying over still counts. New DOA5 DLC if one purchases on the PS3, you get the PS4 version free.

The PC gamer vs console gamer is a more childish version of PC vs Mac or Apple vs Android/Samsung.

Basically one chooses what one prefers. If you want to play around with stuff and customise water cooling and fsck around with heat sinks and sit in front of a retarded looking box you play PC games. If you just want a little box hidden under your 65 inch LED TV you get a console.

PC games - More Western style FPS games.
Console - more Japanese style RPG and action games.

Why did you not buy it new?

You try buy a 7990 and its waterblock new and tell me how it goes.

My point still stand why does steam give you the option to share games you are done with playing.

If it was so BAD why are they doing it?

Hardly any PC gamers care about 4K. Just because it exists doesn't mean you need it. My next monitor will be 1440p because 4K is too demanding on hardware.

I've never come across a console gamer with a single controller. And you can't play online without a PSN sub. Even if you knock off a few grand for a secondhand PS4, you can still buy a great PC.

The number of PC exclusive games dwarfs the number of console exclusives. But yeah, if you can't go without a particular exclusive then that will override sensibility.

Your opinion on DOA is just that - your opinion. The general consensus is that DOA 5 is mediocre.
