As you all know it's nearly that time of the year again. I decided to buy a new computer for my younger brother. I have all the basics down and I just need some advice as I have not built a PC up in years.

Well here are the specs :

CPU : Intel I7 950 3.06Ghz 4.8GT 8Mb FLCGA8 1366 Processor

Motherboard : Intel X58 Smack Over Main Board LGA1366

GPU : Geforce GTX 460 1GB DDR3, DVI,HDMI - Asus (In Sli)

RAM : 3 x Samsung 2048MB DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory Module

Hard drive : Barracuda 1.0TB 7200RPM 32MB SATA 3.5" Drive

Power Supply : GIGABYTE® ODIN 720W 24-Pin Power Supply, 4 Molex & 6 SATA Power Connectors,

Please let me know if I missed something and also whether or not this Power supply will suffice. Any positive feedback will be greatly appreciated. The system will cost about R9000 to R10000.

Havent build up a PC myself in a while, but sounds very good. The PSU should be sufficient, only thing that really takes up lots of power cables other than GFX card is hard drives, unless he puts in 6+ drives i cant see it being a problem. 720W is a lot.

Same here damn! Though my brother is still in school I doubt he could afford to buy me a pc. I would not get a gigabyte Odin PSU rather go with something like this:

this:

or this:

they are all 80+ certified so are guaranteed to be more reliable than the Gigabyte

Very very nice gift, and the specs on the rig look pretty impressive as well.

Thanks for all the responses so far everyone. I will definitely have a look at the corsair power supply(I have heard nothing but good things about corsair) .

I was just not sure on whether or not 700 to 800 watts would be enough for a "Sli" setup.

The Odin 720W won't cut it - like Alfroogy said.

Rather get a decent 750W PSU (eg. Corsair TX/HX series or CoolerMaster GX series) if you're going to run 2x GTX 460's in SLI. I would actually go for HD 6850/6870 in CF though!
650W PSU should suffice, but then it might run on the hot side when your PC draws 500W.

Display? IMO SLI 460GTX's is overkill, unless you game at 2560x1600. Sparkle are good, I had one with no issues.

Power Supply : GIGABYTE® ODIN 720W 24-Pin Power Supply, 4 Molex & 6 SATA Power Connectors

I'm running a:
Q6600 @ 4gHz
4 x 1GB
5850 1GB
X48 DQ6 GIGAbyte mother board
Water Cooling System
8 Fans (8-12CM)
2 x 1TB
2 x 500GB
1 x 320GB

all on the same powersupply :)
1 x DVD Writer
2 x Wireless Cards

Yes but that's just one graphics card, two would definitely strain your system.

True.
But SLi is a headache. Its better in my experience to go for a single high end card.
* Just saw he wants a SLI system

Synergy: your PC would probably max at 400W. My Core i7 940 @ 3.9 + 2x GTX 460 @ 878/4400 maxed at 500W.
I would really not attempt to draw like 550W from that Odin 720W PSU which is max rated for 720W and not for 720W continuous output.

Synaesthesia: I'm running 2x MSI Cyclone GTX 460 OC 1GB and it's definitely not complete overkill - but as a gift I would say this rig is completely overkill.
I actually had to turn down AA slightly, otherwise my CoD4 won't run at 125fps flat at 1680x1050. I haven't tried BC2 or Black Ops yet.

Get the GX750watt cooler master.

125fps, is that the ideal? Can you tell the difference between 60fps and 125? I know it was essential in Quake 3 for the strafe jumpers ..

I am thinking of rather not going the Sli route. What would be the best card that I can buy for R4000-R4500.

Thanks for all the help so far everyone.

Actually it pulls about 480w. I think its rated for 600w continuous. Can't remember.

and

75hz - 75fps max

Dont let one persons opinion on SLI affect you.

SLI is awesome, SLI is fast, and SLI works. Two 460's are a great idea, and from Archer (look him up) GPU chart, they are epic fps for buck. go ahead and buy a new 500 series card if you want, I think I would still SLI it.

2x GTX 460 in SLI / 2x HD 6850 is in the R4000 - R4500 range and it WILL perform better than any single card in that range, but the power consumption might be a bit higher. However, this might change as soon as the AMD HD 69xx cards arrive after mid December.

I'm not sure about the framerate thing though. I was a Quake3 fanatic + my CS1.6 had to run at 100fps flat and not just 60.
I can certainly try CoD4 sometime at 60fps rate limit and see if it feels different from 125fps.

Synergy: did you measure 480W with an UPS? Because that is the AC input rating and then you still have to take your PSU's efficiency of 70-75% in consideration, which will bring the actual power consumption of the components to under 400W !
My PC actually drew 540VA from AC input and I have a 90% eff PSU, so my PC's components never drew more than 490W in reality.

Good point- I never take the efficiency into account :/
Yep measured with a UPS.

Back to the framerate thing- your screen is actually limiting you - unless you're running it on 100hz/200hz TV (100/200 Frames Per Second) :)
