here's a question... what should the temp be of a graphics card with no overclocking while playing a game?

I have been having problems with my computer freezing after a few rounds playing online (BF2142, QW:ET etc) and i reformatted last night but still got a freeze just now..

I have a ATI x1950XTX card and i checked the temp straight after re-start and it said 66 degrees... is that too hot for gaming, or should that still be fine??

Those cards are rated to operate at over 100C (although not recommended) so I doubt that that could be the cause of your freezes.

Freezes in a PC are Usually (not always) cause by either the PSU, the motherboard or the RAM.

RAM can be tested with a memory tester (memtest). Always test 1 chip at a time.

PSU can only be tested by swapping it with a working one.

yes they may be rated by im pretty certain that 100 degree is not a good thing

neither is 66 under no load

i suggest u check the cooling in your box, summer is here the air is not so cold

if you have no cooling or poor airflow i would suggest looking into option

ppl often take air cooling to lightly

computers need air to run, if there is no air movement you have a severe problem

i would also advise heatsinks for your memory, if your overclocking those sticks can get very hot

I checked the 66 degrees straight after i had restarted my pc after playing the quake wars demo for about 30 mins.. so it was no a "no load" situation.

I have got a fan at the front of my case, one at the back, and another blowing onto the card itself

I have got 2 512 sticks of corsair XMS2 ram and 2 1 gig sticks of mushkin ram, all with heatsinks already on them... the corsair ram is a year old and the other about 2 months..

maybe it is the power supply then that goes under a heavy load (it is a 500W supply, 1 year old), as it seems to work fine if i leave the computer on overnight connected to the net...

Are there any programs that you can check your PSU's output??

you know, it can be so many different things it boggles the mind. After 6 months of trying absolutely every possible thing to figure out why my pc dumps a blue screen of death after (enter random amount of minutes here) of gaming, i finally got it sorted.

Wanna know what the culprit was? wifi card. Stupid thing worked perfectly fine, but somehow it caused my pc to crash while gaming. never did manage to figure out why. So I pulled it and am now a happy camper.

so it can literally be anything. well, now that I've made you feel better about that, good luck!

ummm run your pc with just the corsair see how it goes

still a problem run the munskin ram only

im almost 100% sure your ram is conflicting

ok, will give it a go, think i tried that before, but will see what happens, thanks

btw, thanks dotvibe!! i tried something similar with my sound blaster, pulled it, used the onboard sound, but still got the same prob.. pc's..... sheese!!

its not pc's man its the users

you cannot mix high performance ram with that munskin man but maybe dats not the problem though

the muskin ram i got is pretty decent.. its also made for overclocking, also DDR2-800 and has i think the same latency etc as the corsair

i doubt considering its corsair xms2

try what i said with the ram and lets us know how it to goes

take off side box remove 2 stick of which ever and test

take out the corsair considering thats only 1 gig

66degree's is low. Most of them Operate at around 85 degree's or more.

I would look at either Power Supply issues.

Could be ram related too. Hopefully you are using a good brand of memory. Then u can check online at what latency's your ram runs best at. and if there are incompatability's

Or maybe Reinstall Chipset drivers. (some people don't even install chipset drivers just do basic windows install with Graphics and sound drivers., and have plenty of Performance Issues or Glitches like pc-restarts or stalling)

i did install the chipset drivers and updated the bios. My ram is mentioned above but i am gonna try taking one set out just now and see what happens when i play

Sounds like yr RAM definitely.. if u've checked that already it could also be yr mobo. Did you try updating ALL hardware drivers?? That can help as well...

i played offline now, for about an hour no problem with just the mushkin ram in... i will try online a bit later, got some work to do first... I did update all the possible drivers that i could find...

ok.... i now tried to play online, with only the mushkin ram in, and the game froze after about 10 mins... but it worked fine for an hour offline.. WTF WTF WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this problem is really peeing me off.... i am gonna try now with only the corsair ram, but i dont expect anything to change.... WTF!

here is the latest installment of my soapie...

the game lasted longer with the corsair ram, but also froze, after about 40 mins online play...

i think i am gonna shoot myself... :(

Don't shoot yourself man ;) I love you too much, even if I don't know you :p

Why don't you just try another NIC (network card), if you've got an onboard NIC, that could definitely have problems if you had a power surge through it at some time, you won't even know it as they could keep working at minimum usage for quite some time.

Double check your NIC's drivers, your router's settings and make sure that both of them are configured to work with each other.

Do this speed test and it should tell you if there are potential problems with the duplexing settings or cabling, after the test, just click statistics and details:

http://netspeed.stanford.edu/

lol... thanks man... i use the on board network (gigabyte mobo) as far as i know the drivers are updated, but will check them as well... u reckon i should perhaps get a separate network card?

ok, did the test, this is the main stuff mentiond:

"no network congestion found, good network cable found, nml duplex operation found

increasing the clients receive buffer will improve performance. "

how do i increase my receive buffer??
