Case: Antec Solo (i think)

i have had the pc since last year oct, problems started about month and a half back.. initially with BF2142, then the rest of the games (also Quake Wars ET). I have now set speedfan to log (thought i did, but i didn't) and i will see what it says.. How do i know what temp setting is for what? i can see the CPU core temps, but what would temp1 and temp2 represent?

Not sure :D That's why I prefer Everest it tells you exactly what temp is for what. Also I think you forgot your PSU specs ;)

EDIT: Also did you change anything before the problems started, drivers, physical hardware, always best to ask.

the only thing i changed, about a month before the problems started, was the extra mushkin ram i put in.. I have already tried taking that out and playing with just the corsair ram, then just the mushkin ram, but both times it bombed...

if i am not mistaken, i have a 500W megapower PSU... will double check shortly, i am gonna download everest trial and see what it says

I doubt the RAM is the problem, Muskin and Corsair are both top ram suppliers and if the RAM is actually working (IE. it passes 24hrs on Memtest86+) then I can't see a reason it would stop working all of the sudden unless you are overclocking the living sh#t out of it. You could try running Memtest86+ for 24hrs although other symptoms like heat/PSU could cause that to fail also.

I would say either the PSU or perhaps heat. You should log your voltages as well, although that isn't always accurate (the voltages reported I mean, a multimeter is far more reliable).

checked on everest, what info do u need off there?

i checked and it is a 500W mega PSU.
i thought about the PSU and heat, but surely playing a game offline will use the same amount of power etc as playing it online? how would that explain me being able to play offline but not online?

i am busy running a system stability test from everest, what should the max core temp be? so far each core running at about 55-57C, with the CPU temp indicating 33C and the mainboard 50C

I would say just log everything, then play a game until the PC hangs and then post the last say 10 lines of the log.

To enable the log just go to [File] -> [Preferences] -> [Hardware Monitoring] -> [Logging]

Select everything there for logging, most importantly the stuff under Temperatures and Voltages, mine for example has Motherboard, CPU, CPU0, CPU1, GPU Core, GPU Ambient, GPU RAM, Hard-Drive x6 (I have 6 HD's) and Voltages has CPU Core, 3.3V+, 5v+, 12v+, 5v Standby, VBAT (which is the CMOS battery, I hardly think thats important tho :p )

Funny, I have seen that before with a Nvidia motherboard that had GBit Lan, the drivers were stuffed and it caused the same symptoms (dropped packets like crazy and it would cause a BSOD after a random amount of time), maybe it could be your network card or your NIC drivers, do you have another NIC you can test with?

If you have a game just play it for about 10min while keeping the logging option on, then you'll know round about your max temps, Bioshock is a game that works good if you have that ;)

ok, will run a game quickly.. i just installed a new network card yesterday, and the same thing happened... i was hoping that that would have been the problem!

ok, the game froze again, just had a look at the logs from everest, and it seems to have stopped logging just after 1837, but the game froze at 1850...

the last temps it shows are mainboard, 33
CPU at 41
CPU core 1 at 51
core 2 at 48
GPU at 67
GPU ambient at 49
both hard drives at 34

Were you playing online? The temperatures don't look like the problem...

Oh yeah does the PC freeze or restart?

If it's not the NIC I would say try lending a powerful PSU from someone to test the computer with...

yeah, was playing online, and the PC froze outright... no signs of gfx overheating before the freeze. Playing fine 1 second, frozen the next. Just had a look in the report made by everest, in the event log, this is all it shows from when i started the game, till when it froze..

Well I'm pretty much out of idea's my opinions are either:

The NIC is damaged, the NIC drivers suck, the motherboard PCI slot is damaged (don't laugh it happen to me on a older system ;) ) or the PSU isn't sufficient, maybe someone else might be able to help.

Only advice I can give finally is to run Prime95x2 (for both CPU cores) for 24hrs then Memtest86+ for 24hrs and if both report no errors you're pretty much down to either NIC, PCI slot or GFX card (doubt it would be that else it wouldn't happen if you're only online)

EDIT: That log just shows punkbuster doing something, doubt it is freezing the PC tho, and the other thing is terminal services, if you think it could be that you can disable it: [Start]->[Control Panel]->[Administrative Tools] -> [Services] -> Search for Terminal Services and double click -> Disable.

Although if it were either Terminal Services or Punk buster other people would have the same problems I think... (You've tried formatting right?)

ok, will give prime a run... couldn't it perhaps be a software setting of sort, not hardware? don't know what it could be, but just a thought.

i just installed the new network card yesterday, but i could always try another one.

could try another PCI slot, will try to swop the sound card and the network card around.

Sure it can that was why I was saying that the Drivers might be the culprit, but the only way to know for sure is if you format install windows with nothing except the latest updates, drivers install the game and then test again. If it still happens it's either the drivers (NIC driver in this case since it only happens during network gaming, but your internet works fine over the NIC normally which makes it a bit unlikely), the game or a service the game is running.

i just noticed now that it looks like everest stops logging when i start the game.. do i have to tell it somewhere to log at all times?

This may be a fix,Turn of system restore then install the game again.this time install the game to another directory, not program files.
try that

Might be a constraint of the trail version, mine keeps logging at all times, and it also logs temperatures of the GPU and Hard-drives,etc.

Just log it with speed fan, if any of the temperatures are ridiculously high that might indicate a problem.

ok, my bad.. saw it logged all the info, just looked in the wrong place..

dablakmark8, i portioned my HD in 2, kept 1 for xp etc, the other for games, so i have already tried that... unfortunately, didnt work, thanks anyway.

I am gonna run prime95 overnight, but busy copying all the files i need to a spare HD so that i can re-format and re-install again...

i just found this error in the log file as well... dont know if it was when i had the freezes, but could some one tell me what the implication of it is??

"Log Name Event Type Category Generated On User Source Description
System Warning None 2007-09-28 23:47:11 Tcpip 4226: TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts. "

i saw that it occured a few times over the last few days.

i also saw a few of these errors:

"Log Name Event Type Category Generated On User Source Description
System Warning None 2007-09-28 07:07:47 RMSPPPOE 63: Received a PPPoE Session packet for an unknown session. Ignoring this packet. "

and

This means that a program had too many half open TCP-IP connections and Windows limited it. New "feature" in Windows XP service pack that stops a program from trying to make too many connections to a server, examples of such a program might be P2P, DOS type attack Virus (not DOS the operating system ;) ), etc.

This won't cause the system to freeze.

Are you perhaps using route sentry or have you created a ADSL dailup type connection? PPPoE is the protocol used by ADSL.

Nothing to worry about, Windows tried to set the Time on your PC using that Internet time thing (double click on your clock and you'll see a tab called Internet Time), and the connection probably timed out, happens often, you can even check yourself if you try to force a update 1/4 updates will be successful.

i am using route sentry. using a openweb and a mweb account to connect
