Diablo is all about loot drops. I haven't played 3 but I remember being totally hooked on 1&2 notwithstanding (or maybe as a result of) the repetitive gameplay.

Well, that's partly because Dishonored isn't actually a shooter. It can be played as one, but at its heart it's a stealth game. You're supposed to sneak around and do everything sneaky-like. I can't imagine how utterly boring Dishonored must be if played as a shooting game.

Bioshock Infinite on the other hand is quite cool. Enjoy the look and feel, but perhaps I'm just not a fan of the shooting games in that I really get a little bored with moving around then someone shooting at me. Then moving around, then someone shooting again, and they hide the automatic weapons in so much light that they're tough to spot.

Bioshock Infinite is infamous for being a good visual novel and a terrible game. The shooting is boring as **** and I barely made it through the game because of it. I'd highly suggest trying a few other shooters, because Bioshock Infinite is far from the best representative of the genre.
 
DJ, one game I would really suggest starting with is Skyrim. It really is one of the most accessible games from recent years and it's an amazing game for casual gamers. Think of it as a bit like GTA with swords and magic and dragons trying to eat you. It's completely freeform and very easy to get into.

Sadly it's a bit lacking in depth and you never feel like you're making much of a difference in the world, but it's still a lot of fun just doing your own thing.

The thing with Minecraft (for me) is that I find it an amazing game in theory, but I don't enjoy it in practice. I always watch other people having fun and look at all the amazing things they build and think "wow that looks fun" and then I start building my own stuff and I'm bored within minutes.

Pretty much how I feel about it. I've never been able to play top-down ARPGs like Diablo solo. I never finished Diablo 2, Sacred, Titan Quest or Torchlight 2. It gets boring as hell very fast if you're playing solo. If you're playing with friends it's less boring only because you're actually socialising with someone.

I really do not understand how people can play games like Diablo 3 for such long periods of time. If there is a personalised hell for each of us, mine probably has a room with a computer that can only play Diablo 3. My heaven would probably be the same thing, except that Diablo 3 would constantly throw me an error 3007.

I don't think DJ is that kind who is into High Fantasy as a genre (might also be a reason why he skipped on a certain worshipped series), equivalent game to Skyrim is Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

I agree on both of those points. BioShock's shooting is incredibly dull. Even the big enemies are just a matter of emptying out ammo clips till they fall.

Just shows how tastes differ.

I found Skyrim incredibly boring - I tried but just couldn't get into it.

True.

There is however a large element of balancing between speed, damage output, and toughness once you reach a particular point in the game.

Oh, and it's great for mindless monster smashing - pixel destruction at its best.

Yeah, the dragons, magic, and fantasy crap actually puts me off more than anything else. I can't even immerse myself in that sort of thing as I find it rather, well, childish. No offence intended here, I just have zero appreciation for fantasy. LOTR? Crap. GoT - can't be bothered. Harry Potter? I'd rather chew my own ear off. I imagine it would be the same for gaming...
