PC game suggestions for a noob...

I've been inspired to pick up HL2 (ep1-2) again after seeing the Fakefactory 2013 graphical mod.

Racing games (I even own a steering wheel I've never used)
Sports games (wish there were decent rugby and cricket games)
GTA
Never played Call Of Duty or similar big title games. Ever. I don't know if I'd enjoy them. Might have to try it out.
Splinter Cell (I played this once before and it was pretty cool)

I'd like a game to have impressive graphics, to have a story that keeps one engaged, and doesn't involve buying a heap of crap all of the time to continue playing.

Online or offline I don't mind, but I've never actually played an online game before in my life...

For Racing games, if you prefer more simulation than simcade/arcade, the following is for you, if this is on PC of course:
- Assetto Corsa -> http://www.assettocorsa.net/en/ . Still on beta early access, but the driving is quite pleasurable, and you can get used to the awesome physics so long.
- rFactor 2 -> http://rfactor.net/web/rf2/ . Note: this is very sim, with crappy menus, but the driving model is amazingly realistic. No frills, no fuss.

Both these need to be played with wheels/pedals for full enjoyment.

If you like more simcade type games, you can try F1 2013 from Codemasters. I actually prefer F1 2012 because its driving model was more believable, but in the end both are for the casual gamer, so it really doesn't matter which you get, though 2012 could be way cheaper.

For FPS games, I have very limited experience, but CS:GO is pretty worthwhile for me.

It also destroys the art style of the original game. It doesn't try to keep it. I'm all for graphic mods in my games but HL2 should be left alone unless someone can make a graphical mod while keeping the HL2 look.

On another note, I usually ignore adventure games coming out in parts/episodes, except the Telltale series as it is more complete (or you could wait until the bundled release), but I have noticed that the later games introduced in parts are made available through updates than purchasing every single one.

The Sherlock Holmes adventure games was good, although the earlier ones had a better story. Graphics means nada to me when it comes down to a good adventure game, love my proper puzzle adventures such The 7th Guest and it's sequel The 11th Hour, Myst was awesome although I did not complete any other games in the series. Syberia is still up there on my list.

Actually they should make another Privateer, purchased the bundle (1 and 2) a while ago to work on Win 7/8, even though I own the originals, plus the Wing Commanders.

I think DJ should download Elite :p will keep him busy...

Take a look at some clips of Watchdogs (only out later this month). It is GTA'esque regarding the player perspective and sandbox elements, but more "serious" regarding story and motives. I'm definitely keeping my eyes on that...

Me too. I have been toying with pre-purchasing it. I love games that allow you to use the environment and this one allows you to manipulate it somewhat. Looking forward to it.

Really, they're advertising a Season Pass before the game is even out? **** that. I'm scratching it off my list of games to buy.

A season pass is essentially a pre-purchase of yet-to-be-released content at a discounted rate than if you purchase it on release.

Also, shocked I haven't seen this thread before now. Can't believe you're playing games :D

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls

Ask Old Mean Bastid - similarly to you, he decided to give gaming a bit of a whirl - he is now a regular.

The game is free up to the first significant Boss Fight which is long enough to give you a solid feel for whether you'll enjoy the game.

Bandwidth considerations might be a bit of a constraint, it's a couple of gig to download, but you can copy the directory from someone to alleviate this problem.

Drop a line in the Diablo 3 thread and I'm sure someone will be able to help out.

1. If it does grab your fancy, I must warn you that it is addictive, so do take this into account
2. The game really comes into it's own once you've 'finished' it so it's worth joining the MyBB Clan (if you get into it) and people will soon help you level up to the requisite level
3. We have a nice MyBB community going ingame which adds immensely to the ingame enjoyment as well

Most people here recommending multiplayer games do it for the social aspect. If you actually have a social life and things like story are important to you then multiplayer is just a waste of time. You end up playing the same game everyday instead of expanding your interests and trying out new things.

Diablo can and is played very successfully as a solo game [justsaying]

I wouldn't agree with that at all. I don't play multiplayer games much because ironically I don't know many people to play against; but the friends I have who play MP get together for a whole weekend and set up LANs. It's very social. Plus 64-person BF4 sessions are so much fun.

Thanks. No more bandwidth constraints by the way.

As for an earlier post about my specs being poor - the games I've tested so far I've played on high and they are smooth as silk, and pretty good looking...
