Denmark...literally all of it. Thats not a recommendation more to put (another) interesting spin on the conversation.
I'm told Just Cause 2 does well on the open world front...but I cannot vouch for it...I didn't play enough to really get into it.
Again OP...watch the steam sales...they happen every <6 months & rarely disappoint in terms of price/value.
Minecraft just looks...well...silly.
Will check out the Steam stuff. Struggling to find anything I might enjoy, to be honest. Will give one or two things a bash - this is more than just morbid curiosity (as you might be able to deduce). Hence why I'm now checking it out again...

lol - was just an example of scale. Seems to be similar to the reasons grown adults build 3m tall lego structures. Not my thing either tbh...but seems to fly with many
The steam sales align with US holidays...so Halloween and what not. Broadly speaking 6 month cycle though. And only idiots buy stuff that isn't on 50%+ sale...66 OK 75+ is excellent.
Still think Dishonored would suit you. Its got a certain polished stealth about it...story driven yet smooth.

I've not done Bioshock Inf, but I can vouch for Dishonored being quality.
The DLCs have proven engaging too...esp the trials one.

GTA IV. I've played all the other GTA instalments over the years, but this is awesome. I know it's been out for a number of years, but what a game.

Minecraft is far from silly. It's the Lego of videogaming. The only reason I don't play it is because I don't have time to invest in it. I beat Dishonored so that says something as I rarely manage to play something long enough to beat it. The morality concept is interesting. But really every video game needs to be played on its own merit, ie independently of the genre it supposedly represents and your own preferences.
I don't like racing games but I love Trials. I don't like turn based strategy but I'm fanatical about Advance Wars. Games that don't seem to fit your taste can suck you into a black hole in reality if you give them time.

Just a mere suggestion, why not try Battlefield 4? The only multiplayer stuff is awesome, and the single player game play is not too bad.

I'm surprised no-one mentioned the Batman series? Arkham Asylum, City and Origins.

I could never finish GTA IV for some reason. GTA V on the other hand was just on another level - the story and mechanics were far more engaging.
@DJ seriously, preorder Watch Dogs. GTA like, but a spy/hacker version of it. If you preorder through steam, then you can download it before it's released and it will unlock on release day, which is about 3 weeks away.
You can also get the Mass Effect series for a bargain now, and in terms of the story, it's ahead of anything else out there.
So as and when I get time, I'm going to test out Bioshock Infinite and Dishonored over the coming weeks. I'll be sure to report feedback for you lovely geeks as soon as I can.

The only games I ever touch nowadays are point-and-click adventures (and similar). The LucasArts and Sierra classics (On-Line) adventure games have great replay value, every pc gamer should complete Monkey Island 1-3. Little Big Adventure 1-2 is still something I play once every 5 years. Deus Ex 1-3 is also a very special gem in my opinion, also an abundance in games similar to this. I even replayed the Ultima series over December.
