PC game suggestions for a noob...

Honestly, I would just install Steam and go through the demo games. Pick the ones that have the least data requirements at first. Try out the demos of a few and start to get an idea of what you might like outside of sports games. From that either download a full game from a demo that you like or just cross check that genre with other popular games in the same genre, then wait for a special weekend and buy it.

Perhaps dedicate a little bit more of your cap to a game or two in the new month?

LoL is the kiddie version of Dota 2 IMO.

Bioshock Infinite is good but it has a bloated middle section that lets it down IMO. I still haven't managed to finish it because of that despite it having some very good elements like the characterization of Elizabeth. The game I currently can't stop playing on PC is Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. It's a big step forwards from the first 3. I must have put 30 hours into it so far.

Is the above laptop decent enough for gaming?

Yeah for sure. If you have a 1600x1200 resolution you'll be able to play most things on high.

1366x768 on laptop and 1280x720 on external display...

Been watching the gameplay for a few and Assasin's Creed didn't do much for me. I guess you actually have to play these things to really find out though...
 
I also played Trackmania. It was fun(ish), but I got bored after a little while and never returned...

You should upgrade that screen to fHD sometime. Makes a big difference to productivity and gaming.

It's an enormous open world where you can practically do anything you want at any time but the storyline still pulls you along at a good pace. Plus the graphics are ace. Yeah it takes hours to get a feel for any game. I'll get back to Infinite when I'm done with Black Flag though - it is one of the best games of last year.
 
Money is going into my business for now, so no upgrades of any sort for the time being I'm afraid.

I like the open world game concept. I want to be able to do my thing, which is why I like GTA...
