pc gaming is a nightmare

Are you sure your not a PC noob? Your not just trying to bash PCs cos your a Xbox fanboy are you?

trust me i aint ... (i doubt flashing your 7800gtx's to 480MHz clock is a noob thing) running the 4800+ at FX60 speeds (OC'ed of course) ... the GPU's are also OC'ed ... i am able to tun oblivion perfectly at very good framerates with everything maxed ... not NWN2 ... latest drivers the works ... i kinda just about given up ... Funny enough in one scene i played with setting my SLI to AFR id get 16fps, then i set it to single GPU rendring id get 20fps ... wtf??? ... read all the tweakguides ... not an xbox fanyboy trust me ... :)

This exactly why I don't sell gaming PCs anymore.

When someone asks me to build their kid a gaming PC, I tell them to go and buy an Xbox 360.

PCs nowadays just have too many clashes with the type of RAM, motherboards, etc. and it sometimes takes weeks to troubleshoot what the problem is. It took me about 3 months to discover why my current PC was freezing in games. I fixed it by turning up the Vcore voltage of my CPU - a sollution no one ever thought of on forums.

Anyway, it's working now, but only because of sleepless nights.

if you buy cheap or unbranded components you are bound to have hassles. I have been using MSI all my life, and NEVER had a days hassle!
I build PC's all the time and only use well known, track proven name brands and all my clients are very happy.

How much is a PS3? R6000 - R10 000 ??
For that price, you can get one hell of a pc, all extra's included! and not can you only play the latest games, but do alot more than a PS3 can.

Hell, why not get a laptop for that price, sure, cant play the latest games, but its mobile.

I have had troubles with Gigabyte as well as Asus, two of the biggest and best brands out there!

AMD vs Intel was a question that used to keep me up at night, but I resolved that problem quite simply and elegantly, I went with IBM.

. . . And I don't have to worry about upgrading my 360 for another 5 years ;)

well i aint using non branded equipment ... the 7800 GTX's are Gigabyte ... the motherboard is the Nforce4 Neo4 Plat SLI from MSI, Corsair Memory, Antec True Power 2 PSU, Antec Chasis, Zalman CPU fan, Zalman GPU fans, Creative X-Fi Elite Pro Sound ... so the pc is great get 13000 odd in 3DMark 05 and i think thats pretty good ... but NWN2 runs like ****! ... i just tried running without SLI and with SLI .. no difference ... also changed my profiles to point to the correct executable ...

and thats my point bout PC gaming ... i got a pretty decent rig and on max out settings i can run NWN2 at 5fps!!! ... Developers code poorly and i doubt you will really see this on a console ...

Why, o why do you have to max out the settings? A lot of those settings you can hardly see a difference between max and, erm not max. I have a 6800gs and NWN2 ran perfectly fine. Although in general it's one of the poorest coded games I've played. Oblivion looks a lot better and plays faster...

After making it my mission to get this game running smooth ... I did the following:

1. Disable Vsync in the Global profile
2. Deleted the SLI profile that came with the 93.71 drivers
3. Create a new profile with Nhancer
a. Vsync forced off
b. Chose AFR rendering 1 AND chose compatibility flag check box 22

In one scene I would be getting 13fps ... same scene now is 35fps, under heavy fighting and spells nothing under 20fps

The biggest setting was the compatibility flag being set ... just proves what lengths one needs to go to, to get a PC game to run ok. Now with an Xbox you don’t need to do that :)

Oh btw my settings for the game are maxed out at 1280x1024 … no AA though

adamr, it's not like that with all games though. Neverwinter Nights 2 is just really badly coded :(

It's not that. It's the fact that PC programmers are getting lazy. They just say "go upgrade" and we listen. There's no more need for them to optimize their code until we say "NO!" to upgrading.

Etienne, thats true! Software developers can get lazy, but at the same time if you look at the progression of the graphic engine over the years how long will it be before PC graphics are yet again way infront of the console equivalent? The only threat I see to this is if they start using that Cell chip to it's full potential.

That wouldn't make a difference. A GeForce 6600 could run circles around a cell Processor even with it's eight SPU's. GPUs are made for non coherent data sets with no dynamic execution units. Just massive pixels in flight subjected to the same program (be it vertex or pixel) in a FIFO way. Shouldn't draw parallels between those. Cell is no good at rasterizer based graphics as used today for consoles and PC games.

It is true that many of todays consoles are unoptimized, there is no question about that, but also as far as what games look like today compared to what they should have ideally looked like if everything had gone to plan is different. We are now getting an influx of game visual features which make our games slower than they should be. Sad but true...

So in other words, within the year, Xbox360 & PS3 graphics will start to look outdated.

Folks on forums seem to think that the majority of game playing public like themselves run the latest and greatest wonder board from nVidia while infact most people run pretty mediocre cheap hardware i.e 6200 TC or Intel G965onboard video.

Look at the Steam hardware survey sometime and see how many folks play HL2 on midrange to lowrange cards or even worse ... old dated crap like a Geforce 4MX and 5200FX.

PS3 or Xbox won't look dated for their 6 year lifespan at all.

Have you got a link to that survey?

Regardless of what 'the masses' use, I think GPU technology will continue progressing like it always has. There will always be a spoilt teen or a geek with a Christmas bonus to blow on a piece of kit that will make his cyber-pen0r bigger than everyone elses. The PC market also has stronger and stronger chips & memory speeds to sprint past what the consoles are capable of.
