pc hardware upgrade

I'd actually suggest you get a new monitor. While the processor is a bottleneck, it's not so much so. The higher the resolution you play at, the less of a difference processor makes.

I'd suggest a new monitor. The Samsung 2494 or the Samsung T260.

The 2494 has built in speakers and hdmi so you can take it with for your consoles. Much easier to carry around than a lcd tv.

So you suggest the psu at 450w and the cpu is not that abig problem as the monitor? Will the graphics get much better with the hdmi port that i can use on the graphic card as the radeon hd 4890 also got hdmi port.Just comes to show,i bought this samsung lcd screen 4months back and with no knowledge the sales person said this is a very good screen and i will need nothing more.It just comes to show that you must do homework before buying, thanks for the advise

This actually makes the most sense! You can pick up a Samsung 2333SW for like R2 100... so you have R1900 change.

In terms of CPU's... you cant upgrade (on that mobo) so I would get:
Mobo: Asus M2A74-AM SE +-R700
CPU: Phenomx3 Tripple-core 8750 Black edition (2.4Ghz) +-R1200
So now you have R100 left for some sweets :p:erm:

Oh, and upgrade to a 64-bit OS to "use" ALL 4GB of RAM!

Very few "sales people" in IT shops know what they talking about! They are just as qualified to sell beds, clothes etc.

And your PSU is fine!

I'm with Ponder on this one; you really do not need to upgrade anything. If you were to upgrade your CPU, you probably be disappointed with the impact on gaming. For example I upgraded my CPU by 20% (rough numbers) and got a 1% increase in gaming benchmarks....

Maybe consider getting a cheap or second hand Nvidia card to offload the physics? I am pretty sure that the intensive calculations are overloading your CPU; upgrading your CPU will help, but not as much as dedicated hardware.

Your monitor is good, I do not think you were ripped off. If you get a 2333 it will not necessarily make any "look" better, in terms of graphic quality, but maybe you will like the 3 extra inches....

Also, the HDMI port will not improve graphics, are you running VGA or DVI?

Offloading usually refers to the process of moving specific instructions from the CPU, to a dedicated hardware device; usually to improve performance.

Your CPU is designed to perform general calculations and struggles to perform the intensive real time physics calculations. To improve performance Nvidia cards have a dedicated processor, specifically designed to perform physics calculations; better than your CPU ever could. Unfortunately ATI does not have a similar processor.

So, with physics offload, you install the Nvidia card to do the physics, and your ATI card to render the graphics; thus freeing up your processor, and improving performance.

Some people using this method have noticed a 10fps improvement in Mirrors Edge, for example, even using a fast Quad processor. Unfortunately it will not assist all games (some games do not use physics modelling), and even then not to the same degree.

If you have the hardware already, give it a go. It will do better than having it sit in the cupboard. Note that it is not a simple install (in the sense it is not a supported configuration), and you may bugger something up ;)

The 2333 doesn't have hdmi. I didn't see that you only have a 450watt power supply. My advice now is to get the 2494 and a coolermaster 650watt power supply.

Rather spend the extra cash for a hdmi port i reckon. It does not cost much more and maybe one day you will use it :)

Also a cpu upgrade would help i think as a 5600+ is not exactly mind blowing compared to phenom 2 920 :D

I am still trying to figure out what is wrong with your graphics?
Is it too slow or does it not look "nice" enough?

I really can not see any problem with your current rig except that it might be a bit old, but it is still working fine.

For one, your resolution on that screen is totally wrong for games. It might be good for office work where you would like to have two windows open side by side, but for games it is crap. Just my opinion.

Hi i am new to this.Ive bought myself a Sapphire 1gb gddr5 radeon hd 4890 card and using a amd athlone (tm) 64 X 2 dual core 5600+ 2.81 Ghz with 4 gig ram and 450 watt power supply.operating on vista premuim 32 bit.I live in kimberley and want expert advise. What do i have to add to this card to make it better graphics than my xbox and ps3.Ive got a samsung lcd 39 inch television. My pc screen is a Syncmaster 2033 lcd 15000:1 dynamic contrast screen.I want great graphics.Any info please got about R 4000,00 to spend but would like to spend less for the best value
If your television is 1080p and your console games support that then you'll be getting a slightly better resolution from your TV than from your monitor, but not by much. If your TV is 720p then your monitor is slightly better than your TV. I'd say your graphics card is already at least as powerful as the ones in the consoles. If you want great graphics don't push the resolution too high. Better to have all the bells and whistles on.

Whether you need a bigger power supply depends on the demands of your components. A bigger power supply is not going to make any difference to anything unless you're short on power. That graphics card needs a fair amount of power, and the processor needs quite a bit, but 450W should be more than adequate for the system.

At last, another voice of reason. People seem hell bent on getting this guy to spend money when there is no need.

Oh, the 1600x900 resolution is correct for his lcd as it is the native resolution and it's still 16:9 so no issue there.

@looksharp,

What exactly do you find problematic about your graphics? Please elaborate a bit more as we are sitting on this side without really knowing what issues you are experiencing.

Still get some lag on crysis and on dirt if i put everything to a max.Dirt gets lag when there are more than two cars on the track like 8.Maybe i am looking for to much i suppose but i like to play with everything at the max or would like to.

On what resolution do i have to play that is good for gaming?

I say get a 720 BE Tricore PhenomII, and new mobo if yours doesn't support it..

Perhaps a 500W-550W PSU..

Seeing you use a lcd stick to it's native resolution of 1600x900 else things will look like crap. maybe just don't run all gfx settings at max.
