Pc prob - mobo perhaps

yep, i had exactly the same prob and it was my mobo. BTW, the speakers dont hav 2 be on, the beep sound comes from the mobo.

Are you able to ascertain whether or not the PC is POSTing? Leaving it for a while, can you see (via front-panel connectors) / hear hard drive activity ?

Have you tried swapping out with known-to-be-working RAM? And trying different slots?
Have you tried a CMOS clear?
Have you tried stripping out to the bare-minimums (PSU, motherboard, processor, RAM) ?

I'd wanna check that it's definitely the motherboard before buying a new one. Do you have access to similarly spec'd hardware to run some swap-outs?

If it were me with this problem, I would rather consider this a sign to upgrade. Buying a motherboard for almost R400-00 to get the same performance as before doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, when you can get great deals on brand-new motherboard/processor bundles for R1000-00 (granted, it's 2.5 times the price, but you get quite a performance and feature-set jump).

But at the end of the day, if R400-00 is all you have... :(

But yes, if it's the motherboard, it will definitely make life easier for you!
 
that era of motherboard is prone to leaky capacitors around the cpu socket area...lookf or ones with bulges in them or stuff coming out.

your lack of post can be either a dead cpu or a dead motherboard..without swopping out one or the other you can tbe 100% certain
 
I'm no expert in this field but backing up some when the OP changed over to the GFX card as opposed to the onboard to rule that out as the problem,how is it known that the machine was actually trying to work off the card rather than the onboard?
Doe'snt one have to disable the onboard 1st somehow?

It's possible, yes. But possible in the same way that some day Jessica Alba may meet me and fall in love with me: the chances are very small, unless there's something VISIBLY wrong with the motherboard (you'd see physical signs of damage).

In general, it should be safe, though.

How did the CMOS reset go?
