I had a virus problem few months back which forced the PC to restart itself, by using safe mode i could at least run AVG scan to remove the virus. Now this is something else, the PC doesn't even login to windows. It restarts just before loading the Desktop or Windows Logon screen.. I tried safe mode, last working configuration, nothing helps am kinda stuck. Can a virus do this? Or is it hardware (Graphics card maybe?)

Go into safe mode, right click on "My Computer" and select properties. Choose advanced> at Startup and Recovery at the bottom, choose settings> at System failure deselect the checkbox which says "automatically restart", click ok, ok.

Now, go into My Computer, right click on the C drive, main harddrive with XP on it and choose properties, click "Tools"> Check Now> Select both check boxes and click start, read the dialogues and click yes and yes again (I think), if it asks to restart, click yes and when Windows loads, it should check the disk.

Don't press any keys and don't restart it while it's busy, it could take 30 minutes or two hours.

Come back and tell me if Windows loads after the Disk Check ;)

^^ What he said :D

Even safe mode is not allowing access according to the above.:o

He said he tried safe mode, he didn't say he couldn't access it, therefore I assume he accessed it and didn't do anything worthwile there. If Windows loads, ie. the progress bar, Safe Mode will load ;)

Ultimate boot CD could be the solution, but I'd rather use an XP disc and do a repair install if he really can't access safe mode, UBCD4WIN is rather technical and most people load it and think it fixes everything by itself. :p

Certainly looks very good:) So you need to create a boot disc for a specific machine using the original windows cd i.e. one boot disc won't work on different machines?

No, You just need an XP disk to slipstream the OS (because the XP OS is not open source). You can use any XP SP2 disk to create the boot disk.

Once you've booted into UBCD, it is fairly easy to run some diagnostics, fixes. It isn't all that technical.

XP repair rarely works... especially if there is some MBR damage caused by a virus.

Well, then you fix the MBR with the recovery console, what could be easier ;) Don't get me wrong, I love UBCD4WIN, I've used it countless times, but if I don't have to, I won't :p

Alright! Now i've booted with this UBCD, now what? what do i fix and how... Well i ran the McAfee Anti-virus scan which is under start>programs and no viruses were picked up. Can i install any software into my c: while booted with this CD?... kinda stuck here

my solution is always create a new install from xp cd and name my windows folder to windoze. After everything is A ok,i will just cut paste all the settings over,This has always worked for me.
So you transport all your documents and settings stuff over to the new profile.Program files stays the same...int the end if you happy your pc is workng you can delete the previouse windows folder.

Let me follow what you saying here... I first rename the windows folder. Then install windows afresh. From the old "document and settings folder, what do i copy... everything?

ok fist do this.Let the pc boot up from xp disk ok.When xp loads allthe stuff ,go through the normal process of doing a new installation...ok done.
Now there will be a option to install xp with a different folder name ok,Select that and it will ask you what will th name be,Dont name it windows, name it any thing you like,Now a new windows ill be installed without you loosing your data.

After all is done you will have a new installation,After that just copy all the files that you want to all the different locations ,like eg music to your new music folder..etc.
Restart your pc and then if you happy just delete the old windows folder,REMEMBER THAT ALL YOUR GAMES AND PROGRAMS WONT WORK AS YOU HAVE A NEW REGISTRY.
To fix this just reload everything that you must load,It wont creat more space as all your stuff is still in the programs files.SOme stuff will still work if you create shortcuts to your new desktop.

I found this way to always work for me and the main thing is always keep track of used space.Delete what you dont need like the other profiles and stuff..
Go for it,very simple

just a humorous post,In my dual boot xp windows folder is named K@K and my pc's name is billhater, just wanted to share that.I think its funny.
Sonyx..its like your own custom windows folder,Soname it what you want.

Run some of the disk diagnostics.

If it booted correctly under ubcd, it probably isn't a hardware issue... so run the disk diagnostics, run a memory test and then shutdown. remove the ubcd and try a normal boot.
