Really been struggling to find 2x4GB DDR3 dimms that my mobo likes. Might have to go 2nd hand as my motherboard is an Asus P5G41T-M LX bought in 2010 and doesn't like the Crucial Ballistix 4gbx2 gaming DDR3 RAM that I bought. Nor does it like the 1333mhz Patriot RAM i just bought to try as well.

Machine does not boot up with the 4gb dimms, makes no beeping noises. Cant do anything to change settings once they are in.

I have an old Q9550 quad core with 8GB DDR800 RAM and a HD5850. It's 6 years old now, so definitely showing it's age. Just can't afford to upgrade right now

You probably can sell your GPU for R700ish, and then buy something like a R9 270x for R1000->R1100 extra and be able to see a massive performance gain.

Well, I am partial to AMD, was generally good value for money in the past. And since I have a 4 year old motherboard (that costs about R1400) that can take a new AMD CPU it would be wasteful to have to buy another motherboard.

I've decided I will just go with the SSD upgrade for now, that's the only time my PC feels slow for me, on startup, login and shutdown.

Smart choice...thumbsup. The SSD will live with you for awhile and you can decide what to do about the rest of the components later.
