Thanks for all the replies so far. Let me elaborate some more.

The PC they currently play on is my home office PC and the fighting is more between my wife and the elder one. I also prefer them having their own PCs (which I have, but they are not up-gradable to gaming specs)

They play Fortnite together, one on the XBOX and one on the PC. The one playing on the PC prefers the Keyboard and mouse controls over the XBOX controls.

Definately PC, in my teen years complusive upgrade disorder made me too poor to afford drugs and alcohol

on a more serious note, pc is good, it opens up the door to a few extra games, can play with a xbox controller on it also and most nice thing of all these days since you are saying they are competing for pc time is that pc games and xbox games these days are cross platform compatible with eachother so they can rather play together online. if you purchase digital code games on amazon or cdkeys that state its for both pc and xbox then you also have the advantage of being able to install the same 1 game on both devices in the house

Console.

It's easier to control at exam time. (Ie physical removal).

PC is multi purpose so while you thinking they studying that fake study screen is an alt tab away.

Full disclosure - I have a 15 year old boy. He has a laptop that is not gaming capable and a PS4. If he had a gaming PC I shudder to think how little time he would spend on school work.

So your argument is for console because a PC would be too fun and too affordable? :erm:

And all PCs are gaming capable. GOG and Steam have a bajillion awesome games that need little to nothing in the way of horsepower.

Do we blame our education system for the reason we are even debating pc vs consoles in 2018??

You gotta be:
-kidding me
-high
-drunk
-uninformed
-all of the above

If you still believe a console is worth considering over a pc...

I'll never own a console other than the Wii which is now fast becoming dated.

PC trumps a console in my books.

I have a second PC for my children, so there is no fighting me for mine or messing with its settings.

My daughter, 15, very infrequently plays. My lad, 9, gets access a few times in a week. It's not unrestricted or without limitation.

The beauty of PC for me is that it is dual purpose. They can do their research for projects, reports and documents, and some gaming too. They have access to my Steam library and aren't restricted to a handful of console games. In Steam, and other platforms, I can source various titles at reasonable prices.

Right now my lad is playing a free version of Starcraft 2 and the Co-op multiplayer games. He loves it. If he needs variety, he'll ask for Minecraft and play on a tablet.

Sell the xbox and get each one a budget gaming pc for xmas.

I also strongly prefer PC over console, but I have accepted that I'll probably need to buy a PS4 Pro later this year. Those Sony exclusives are too damn good, and Red Dead Redemption 2 is likely to be brilliant and never arrive on PC. It will be depressing to spend several years worth of PC games on just the tiny handful of exceptional PS4 exclusives.

Hush now - my son might find out :D

Oh, and his laptop is a Celeron thingy that I paid 4K for brand new - that thing is definitely not gaming capable.

On a more serious note, he's not interested in any of the old games - it's Fortnite, CoD/BLoPs, etc or he's not interested (that's what all his irl and online friends are playing)

PS: Parenting is a tough gig in this day and age (especially when you, the parent, are a gamer but realise that if you let your kid game all the time he'll never get an education  )

I'm 90% certain RDR2 will arrive on PC.

A rockstar dev had it listed as one of the pc games he was working on in his linkedin profile and it was promptly removed when discovered.
Rockstar execs recently stressed to shareholders the growing pc market and it's importance to the company
Rockstar has not denied a PC version is in the works.

Ah, brilliant to hear that. I just wish Rockstar would confirm a PC version, even if it's only due for release months later. The thought of spending R850+ on a single game disgusts me, so would be nice to avoid that.
