Hey guys,

My pc was still working fine this morning, left it for about 30-40 mins, when I came back I see that my pc was powered off and I know for a fact I didn't switch it off. I tried powering it on, nothing happens.

My screen receives power via the PSU and I can see that my screen is still powered on, obviously in power save mode. I checked on my mobo, its an ASUS P5K Deluxe and its green light indicator is still switched on, indicating that everyhing is 100%.

I tried replacing my power cable, and still the same, nothing wants to happen when I try to switch it on.

What on earth can be wrong ? Is it PSU oriented or mobo or a combination of both ? My pc did get struck by lightning about 3 months ago, but never had any problems since then.

BTW, my computer doesn't make any beeping noises, nada.. its just dead as a door nail.

Isn't there a way to start a pc manually via the motherboard ? Is there anything else I can try to rectify the situation ?

Either mobo or PSU is gone. The mobo receives both 5V and 12V. Its likely that one of the two is MIA. Whether the fault lies in the PSU or mobo is a matter of trial & error....or testing w/ a multimeter.

Thanks Havoc,

A friend is going to bring his multimeter to me in a little while, I'll test it with that. I really hope its the psu, as I don't want to fork out money on a new mobo. I was in any case going to replace my psu (AOpen 450W :D - which I've had for 6 years now) with a decent one for a GTX 470, which I'll probably buy at month end.

Will keep you posted.

Yeah, just be careful with that multimeter. You want to measure direct current voltage. Google for diagram on where the voltage differential should be on the plugs.

Oh, and odds are that the mobo is the culprit, not the PSU. :(

Well, I did some tests. With the power on of course, using a molex connector, I get only 0.5V on my 12V rail and 0V on my 5V rail :(

Just to make sure, I tested it with a friend's pc switched on, it showed the correct readings on his machine, but my pc, the fans don't even want to turn on.. its...just...dead

The mobo light is still green, and my screen I discovered is getting its power from the wall socket and not via my psu like I initially thought, hehe. Anyhow, I guess its safe to assume that my 6 year old PSU finally died, guess the quad and gpu where too much for it in the end.

Isn't it also possible that the power switch itself or the one of the cables running from the power switch into the mobo is faulty? :)

Its possible, but don't put negative thoughts in my head now, lol. I'm going to order a new PSU tomorrow, if its still not working after that, then I'll consider that it might be the power switch itself :(

could be the psu got hurt that time with lightening & now finally gave in. It is possible for the psu to appear to be working, might even turn fans, but not be able to power the board.

Does a friend have a spare psu that you could test with?

Could be the board if that still does not work.

Can't believe someone would remember that post of mine when my pc got hit by lightning. Unfortunately none of my friends have a spare psu lying around, so I need to bite the bullet and buy/order a new one tomorrow. Its actually a good thing that it went, was planning on upgrading like I said in previous post anyhow. I just hope and pray that it is the psu, but I'm pretty sure it is.
