right so...

I have one of these, Corsair HX520W which is a semi-modular PSU

Connections look like this :

I have one of these, Asus 6950

Requires 1 x 8pin and 1 x 6pin power cables to run.

I bought two new PSU cables, 1 x 8pin and 1 x 6pin. Obviously the 6pin one fits fine, and the one end of the 8pin fits into the gfx card fine... but the other end... :o

any idea how on earth I can get this 8pin into that 6pin socket?

I had a look on the site, and I dont see such a thing as a 6pin to 8pin cable. So I need an adaptor or something?

OP needs to explain more :p
He has got a pre sleeved cable with an 8 pin on the PSU side, whereas he needs a 6 pin. So adding in a ugly add on like that aint gonna cut it :p I reckon if someone could source the terminals used then all will be well as you could double crimp to extra wires into one terminal.

I would modify the side that plugs into the PSU so that it plugs into one 6pin output and one of the outputs for the 4pin molex drives. If you can follow what I mean there.

It should also be fine if you just plug in 2x6-pin plugs into the GPU (unless you were planning on overclocking a lot, in which case, you should probably get a bigger PSU).

It would be the same as plugging another 6-pin cable into the GPU

how so?? The cable looks spliced to me, so I chop off the 2 pin and plug in the 6 pin... Then I plug my cable into the 8pin female connector
