It's either that or move to a little dorp (something smaller than Jeffreys Bay).

Did he also use Gas/Paraffin stoves etc. like us or did he have a generator, cause generators are like cheating lol.
I was actually enjoying the 7 day power outage when I pretended I was camping lol

We have a big ass, full gas stove/oven with 2x 48kg gas bottles!

He's got a generator, probably about the same size as mine. He loses power in the winter all the time from snow/ice on the lines so a few days isn't much of a hardship.

A generator is like cheating . To experience a real power outage is to not have a generator lol like us. We were thinking about getting one, but firstly purchasing one is expensive and then the running costs are so high with the current petrol price.

I think they say it is 22 litres or something per 6 - 8 hours depending on the load which is R220 approximately per day or more. So we saved R1540+- towards other things .

Is Petrol cheaper in the US or is it quite pricy?

A major blackout struck large parts of Nelson Mandela Bay yesterday afternoon, leaving hundreds of thousands of residents without power for hours.

Confident that power would be restored by last night, municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron said a conductor had blown out the Chatty/Ditchling power line, plunging suburbs ranging from New Brighton to Walmer and Central to Linton Grange into darkness.

The power failure took place at about 4pm and by 6pm, according to Baron, power to some suburbs had already been restored.

"A new conductor has to be fitted to the line."

First sentence was actually directed to us south africans (I put it in wrong spot in the post)

But ye -20 degrees must be crazy without heating. You only need R1000 generator to run your pc and lights apparently.

Some big bugger Builders warehouse was flogging on special a few years back when Eskom finally sorted itself out. I think its 5.5 kVa.

Agreed, most people don't realise how lucky we have been. We bitch and complain about an hour or two but have yet to be hit by hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanoes, etc. And then all the doom-sayers regarding Eskom and other local facilities have also been very quiet of late.

All in all, I'll rather stay right where I am, thank you!

Had more or less the same issues when I was over in NZ, experienced more power outages there in the 2 years than all the time together in SA.

But yeah, at least we dont have them natural disasters, that would have made things in SA much much worse in my eyes.

I just go http://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/quakes/recent_quakes.html every now and then just to remind myself how lucky we are
