Hi all,

Myself & my brother in law both have vodacom 3g internet.

Both connect with good signal etc & live in the same area. We want to play games online (1 person hosts & other joins)

I have established both mine & his real IP but cannot access them in game or by pinging.

Is there something I dont know about or has Vodacom blocked this?

I have done the firewall thing etc.

Any help, advice appreciated

Cheers

sorry cant help u but a question to add to yours....

can you download torrents with 3g and how do you go about it???

I believe this is related to your APN . Look on the forums for "unrestricted APN" or some sort of VPN . I do not know enough, but i know there are something about the "internet" APN and static IPs and so on...

That said P2P worked for me fine before...i.e. WoW's update system uses a p2p system , and i actually had to turn it off as i was uploading too much .

On the normal internet APN inbound connections are blocked. bittorrent prefers that you allow inbound connections on a predefined port. So while you can use bittorrent on the internet APN, your performance might not be as good and you will always have the NAT warning/error (depending on your client).

The unrestricted APN allows inbound connections (i.e. anyone on the internet can initiate a connection to open ports on your machine). You can apply for access to the unrestricted APN here: http://www.vodacom.co.za/services/unrestricted_apn/unrestricted_apn.jsp

Spot on, tx!

But remember the 'unrestricted apn' is not in any way different to the internet apn, aside from the open incoming ports, which is a massive risk if you don't firewall yourself.

So please don't think it's a 'special' apn that will give you anything the other apn's won't.

i downloaded some "stuff" using bit torrent (as a client) the other weekend - speeds of 212KB/s were realised. didn't do anything except search for the torrent file & download.

You can also use hamachi to create a vpn, but then you can only play games where you can enter a ip address to join...
