Penpals

I`m talking about modern email....facebook & other social media not really :erm:
snail-mail...haven`t used that in quite some time(a few months actually)

I get quite a few of these, usually claiming to be Russian.
I don't know how she looks and any pic she sends could be found on a porn site and scam warning sites.

Hello, my name is Lovella. I came across a picture of you by chance, and I really liked your looks. You look like a real man who is wise and strong, :) I dunno... :) Maybe we're a perfect match? :)
Do you wanna see how I look like? I hope you'll like me and we can get to know each other and stay in touch... I hope you won't ignore it and you will answer me as soon as you can .
Can't wait for your answer,
Lovella.

I actually do write (snail mail) to a lady in prison in the USA.
She has served 5 of a 30 year stretch.

I was looking for a service through which you can meet penpals, but it seems every site out there wants to act as an intermediary and then wants to prescribe what you're allowed to write about. Then I came across sites dedicated to writing letters to prisoners on death row in America, so I thought why not. I dunno. I feel that despite the **** they've done, they still deserve a bit of outside contact. It's not like they're going anywhere ever again. I reckon that if I was on death row I would like if someone wrote to me every once in a while.

I never got any responses back so either they weren't interested in writing back or the postage costs were just too high.

Just had a thought... There is a website that I subscribe to called Care2 (www dot care2 dot com) - did a quick search there for "penpal" and came up with this article (written in 2011).

Care2 is actually a superb way of meeting people online from all over the globe. Have made quite a few online friends there. Some of the stuff they do is awesome and the interests are incredibly varied. You can "earn credits" for contributing to the Care2 community and build a "reputation" that way. I dig it.

Oh - and I have just seen that there is at least one penpals group on Care2. Doesn't seem to be a very active group, but I guess that once someone has registered in the group - private messaging is more relevant than group activity.
